Default looking to install a tacho into VN

hey guys, i got a VN, and since my dash doesn't have the tacho, i am looking to isntall over wen i finish uni exams in about month and a half! my car is auto, and would it be weird for me to have a shift light on my tacho, since my gearbox is an auto?. i also want to know how much for a decent, large tacho will cost, and average prices of installing, also where are the best places of actually mounting the tacho?

dude, a tacho is ok, but not a huge one & no shift light, im sure if you look in the electrical wiring section, there should be a guide there

if you really want a tacho just get the next level dash..... plug and play

There isnt a need for a shift light..

hmm, thats true, but i really want to have ana ftermarket tacho, not a dash, it just looks better, and i am willing ot pay da extra money since i cana fford it andalso, i cannot increase the performance of my car, since i am performance restricted! also another question i have, is if i do install it, does the dash have to be ripped apart? and my second question is where can i get my hands on sum info for getting the correct shift points for my shift light to light up EVEN THOUGH I HAVE AN AUTO CAR

Shift lights are set at a certain rpm, they will always light up at that rpm, its only good for you if you have a shift kit and manually shift. And the performance restrictions dont stop you from getting CAI, exhaust, tuned memcal etc. just v8's and forced induction. there is a tacho thread in the electrical section i think.

as i said they are set at a certain rpm, you can adjust this rpm, but the tacho cant read what gear your in and change the shift points if thats what your getting at. look at the sticky in the electrical section for an install guide and all the details you will need.

you dont have to rip the dash apart. just wire it into the mechanics rpm check piont.its a pink/orange wire in the pasanger side of the engine bay near the strut tower. its not hard to find.plug into that and the other to earth and the power one and your away.
some of the new tachos are abil to be set at what ever rpm you want it

but personally i dont think theres any need to have a MONSTER tacho with a shift light on an auto unless, like vn6pwr said, you manual shift every where.

Your power band starts to go down hill after about 4800 - 4900. If you keep revving a bit past that though, you'll be at a higher rpm once you're in the next gear, meaning you'll be higher in the powerband. I haven't experimented very much, I'd be interested if anyone's worked out the optimal shift point. I usually set my shift light at about 5 grand, then that gives me up to about 200 rpm to change gear.

IMO you don't need a shift light unless you're planning on taking it to the strip or something. And I agree about not getting a huge tacho..

The thing is with a VN, that it has 92% of max torque from 1200rpm, and after 4000rpm it rapidly loses torque, but power keeps up til 4800 where it peaks, so I wouldnt be revving it much past 5000rpm to get the most out of it... So you dont need to wait to lift the revs anyway.

I'd set the shift light at 5000rpm and try to shift by 5200rpm just how VN Commy does.

You can get them from Auto Bahn and that I believe. Car Toys in SA have them, I think Motoquipe too.

Illegal though... Technically the only legal place to put guages is the left of where the dash cluster etc. is... I forget what Transport SA called it.. Crash something.. And it cant restrict the drivers view.
