    Default Knocking in Bellhousing

Ive got a '90 VN v6 manual with a loud knoching from the bellhousing. It only does it just above idle. Ive just put a new clutch in it but the sound was there before. The old release bearing was broken and the clutch fingers were distorted.
Is the clutch fork supposed to have a big bit of 40x40 bar welded to it? Ive never seen anything like that in a car before.

    Cheers

Whats your input shaft and spigot bearing like? Does it do it if you put your foot on the clutch?

if its a quick tapping sound and it goes away when you apply clutch pressure... then its your pressure plate. Unfortantuly ive been told that it is unfixable. VN fault... Its not an issue with the hydrolic clutches as its a push type and can be adjusted accordingly.

It does go away when the clutch has pressure on it. The input shaft and spigot were in good condition. The vibration comes through the pedal as well which is annoying.

sounds like the pressure plate could be distorted, or a broken spring or something, dont know if that helps, yeah i think the fork is suppose to have that lump of steel on it, like a vibration damper or something, cant remember

did you check the height of the clutch fork pivot ball in the bellhousing if this isnt adjusted right the fork could be tapping the pressure plate. From the block face of the bellhousing to the top of the ball should be 102mm and yes that bit of steel is a vibration dampener

Yep checked that. The old clutch had bent fingers. I put a clutch kit in it since it was slipping only to have the same problem and it bent the fingers on a new pressure plate and destroyed the release bearing. I swaped the clutch fork and flywheel for the ones from my spare motor and box and used the old pressure plate from the same motor. So far its reasonibly quiet.

i'd say, by what you have described,.....what was the flywheel facing like...smooth,rough,any cracks,burn/heat spots? spigot, was it dry?did you replace everything..clutch plate and pressure plate and throwout race?also you may of unintentionally had the gearbox lopsided when replacing it and distorted your pressure plate fingers,or twisted the guts of your clutch plate.now this big chunk of steel you are talking about,on lever, never seen one on any of the VN's i have replaced clutches on,even my calais doesn't have chunks of anything off the lever
