Default Series 1 and 2 differences

This has probably come up before but couldnt find anything with a search. What are the differences between the 2 motors?

not much? theres heaps of little differences.

    cams are different(s2 less lumpy)
s2 has holes in head for pcv
    rocker studs are different thread
    thermostat is at front
    exhaust manifolds are different
    s2 has plastic rocker covers

thats all i can think of this early in the morning, but theres more, grab a gregories and look through the supplement in the back or search on here, the subject comes up every few weeks.

_A_D_A_M_ joged my memory, s1 has a 6 bolt crank for autos and 8 for manual, s2 has 8 bolt all round.

s1 has a rope rear main seal, s2 has neoprene seal.

yeah, inlet manifold is different... different crank bearing design. Otherwise both engines are simiular.

S2 normally has an plastic air restricter in the inlet manifold.

vn s1 had alloy, at least both the s1 motors ive got had alloy covers.

ive never seen a vn s1 with plastic ones, but maybe they changed em in s1.5 or you've just seen motors with em changed for some strange reason

correct, they will fit series 2 aswell,but...(theres always a but) since series one had a different pcv setup, you will be left with a round hole about 15mm wide on the passenger side cover which needs to be welded up or a rubber grommet put in it.

the s1 manual uses a 6 bolt flange on the crank and is different to the auto crank, also the s1 and s2 cranks use different rear main seals and are not interchangable. s1 and s2 use different fuel rails also, s1 has black tube setup where the 2s used finned aluminum setup. s2 had a cam of slightly longer duration but less lift because the s1 produced to much torque from idle for the holden people although they produce the same peak power. as above different cooling systems and diferent intake manifolds etc. lots of little things but both are good. i have s1 manual exec and love it. goes better then my missus VS s2

I had S1 converted to S2 engine (running VP wire loom in engine bay) in one of my past 91 VN. I have a picture somewhere.... will post it up sometime soon.
