Well basically, im stumped and not happy! My vp 5litre has this annoying habit, started today and i cant get rid of it.
Basically, turn the key and the engine cranks over, you can hear its not firing, but the thing is, it will KEEP going around, even when you turn it off and take the key out. I've tried stalling it, put it into 5th or any gear and lifted the clutch and it looks like its stopped but put it outta gear and it goes again. the only way to stop it is to disconnect the battery!!
Ive obviously tried all the fuses etc and nothing is blown.
Can anyone offer any advice on the topic? Any help would be appreciated!
sounds like a short?
ignition would be the first place to check, and then follow it all the way back to the starter motor & ignition module.
its strange, its just happened all of a sudden, i cant understand why or how it could be shorting sumwhere? igntion switch, maybe... but i just dun understand why>
Thanks for the help, im taking the car into an auto elec 2morro to sort it out. Just easier i guess. The guys have worked on a car of mine before so I trust them....
I'll post up what it was once its sorted out, hopefully they can sort it out for me tomorrow.
Lol, a friend of mine had his throttle cable stuck after his kid was pushing the peddal to the metal while the car was switched off. He goes to switch it on and the car rev's up to redline and almost ####s itself cos the oil hadn't coated the engine parts in time. Spent at least a grand on repairs. He is thinking of sending his kid for adoption.![]()
Well i had the same problem and turns out it was a faulty soloniod in the starter motor ..... come to think of it it started when my ignition module shit itself and i was teasting it and thus cranking it heaps.
I am pretty sure that is the problem.

I remember changing the starter motor on the 327 Chev in my old one tonner at one stage.
Went for a drive into town at about 1am to get some smokes.
On the way home I was doing around 110km/h and all of a sudden I could hear this grinding noise and chattering coming from the engine bay.
Pulled over to the side of the road with engine running and the noise was horrendous. All the gauges etc showed normal and no weird smells etc.
I didnt want to turn the car off in case it wouldnt start again (I lived about 20k's from the town itself and very few cars travelled that road during the day let alone at night) so I limped home real slow.
Got home turned car off took keys out and noise was still there.
What had happened is one of the battery leads to the starter (I cant remember which one it was) was looseand had swung around and was earthing on the block and engaging the starter motor.
So at 110km/h my starter motor engaged and was running on the ring gear making a hell of a racket.
Took the starter motor out the following day and pulled it apart and the internals were cooked and the gear on the starter was completely f*%ked.
One very dead brand new starter.
Luckily the ring gear wasnt chewed or it would have been a lot more expensive to fix.

Well.... to stop leaving you all in suspensei took the car to an auto electrican on saturday morning i'll get it back 2morro morning, damn public holidays! haha
Basically, starter motor is shagged, apparently the one i had on there wasnt for a v8 with extractors as it was too close n shit... eventually one thing led to another and its shat itself. So a new one has been put in and basically its all good now.
I'll pick it up first thing in the morning before work.
