Default help guy's quick i need it on the road

    92 VP calais

just to let you know i dont flog my car varey rarely anyway.

I was driving home from work last night and all of a sudden i get this noise without warning?

I thought it was a wheel bearing cause thats what it sounded like, but in a matter of about 500 meters it got louder and louder and louder so i pulled into a servo to try and get a good listen?

It sounds very much like a water pump but it wasn't getting hot, you know how a dry bearing or worn bearing in a water pump sounds when they collapse? well it sounded exactely like that! like a severe dry grinding noise?

well anyway i had a listen and couldn't really tell what it was but i do know it's coming from the front of the engine area? well sounds like it's at the front anyway.

So i stopped it and waited a bit then restarted it and noise still there then all of a sudden sounded like the engine was trying to lock, got plenty of oil and water in it?

so i stopped it so as to not lock it?

Anyway i towed it to my nieces place and put it in driveway then tried to restart and now wont even fire? now the vehicle was running fine never had probs allways been serviced religously!

Please help guy's my job depends on this vehicle.

thanks all and really hope you can help.

Have a look at the harmonic balancer on the crank first and then maybe think about pulling the water pump and timing cover off and pray for a broken timing chain?

Sounds like it might be serious internal damage man. :-( So when you try to start it does the engine turn over? Or is it completely siezed?

dunno if I'd be praying for a broken timing chain, if he's been turning it over with a broken chain, the valvetrain might not be too happy. :-/

no it's not completely siezed it will still turn over? all pulleys still seem to be moving bit it was dark and i only had quick look and there were no knocks or bangs or anything like that. just sounded like a dry grinding sound?

Did you happen to be driving up a hill when you heard the noise? If so then head gasket mate.

pull a rocker cover off and turn it over, that'll tell you if you have a broken timing chain. drain the oil and look for things you don't want to see. check the crank angle sensor and see if the harmonic balancer has damaged it from excess movement in the balancer also.
