Big end bearings are the bearings that attach the conrods to the crank journals. When they are badly worn they'll start to knock and require replacing. The car should not be driven very far with this problem. Not a job for an amateur unless you've got a lot of time on your hands, in fact a friend of mine recently had this problem in his VS, replacing the entire engine with a a wrecker engine with 80,000km was cheaper than repairing it. Unless the car is only being sold for a couple of hundred I'd steer clear.

Offer the guy not more then $500, because you are buying a car with a dead engine, and as mentioned it is cheaper just to put another engine then to get that fixed, trust me once you open that engine, you'll probably replace alot of parts.

Coupla grand, it'd probably be cheaper to pay a mechanic to fit an engine that you source if you don't have a hoist or any tools. In fact you'd probably be better off buying a decent car straightup really.
