misfiring

just a quick question how u tell if ur car is missfiring, cause its been descibed to me as a sandy kind of noise and if i rev my car (in neutral) to about 3000 revs onwards as soon as i stop accerating i can hear the same sort of noise. Now im not sure if its just cause i am in neutral or its does it all the time (may not be able to hear over my exhaust while driving), but it doesn't sound to healthy. If it is missfiring is it really bad for ur engine or should i not worry about it to much also how to you fix it.

maybe your thinking of pinging? misfiring is a stuttering in the idle, or revs if driving.

Mine stutters while idling, but the slightest bit of throttle (900 - 1000 rpm) is smooth.. I'm giving it a service this weekend...anything else I should check?
