    Default Urgent--- Power Steering Issue

    hey guys...

i recently put my engine backtogether

the car drives now just got some small issues

    1. throttle spongy (just needs a tighten of hte cable)
    2. power steering issue
    3. air in brake lines (needs a bleed)

ok now it was pissing out fluid because i forgot to put a seal back in

now it makes funny noises when turning the wheel (has fluid)
and stalls the car if u go too far, maybe i have air in the lines?? do u have to bleed it???

    need help please

to bleed it you need to turn it left and right slow with the motor on and leave the cap off where you put the fluid ive just done it too my car and the pump too and that what i was told too do

since we're on the subject, i was wondering if someone could give me pointers on how to flush the power steering fluid altogether! i have used a syringe 3 times (just taking the stuff out of the resevoir and putting new stuff in) but each time about 10minutes later (of driving) it turns back to black...slowly getting a bit redder but mainly its dirty grey/black

any suggestions? is it possible the fluid has never been changed or could something be going on in the pump...
am i able to just release the low pressure hose on the side of the resevour and fill the resevour up while cranking the engine to make the pump work?

any ideas would be great... its for a VR V6 commy

Hmmmm, maybe if you undo the fluid lines attached to the steering rack? There is a small nut that holds the metal lines onto the rack, try undoing it and then jacking the front end up so you can move the steering wheel freely to let all the fluid squirt out.??

    To change power steering fluid...

idle till fluid is warm. undo hose clamp under resevoir. Best to actually remove and clean resevoir by hand. Refit, refill. Idle till warm, redump fluid, refill, bleed and hey presto guaranteed clean system.

Oh yeah I found it best to use a specific power steering fluid, as opposed to tranny fluid. Seems to get better results, particularly less groan.

ok i've noticed there are a few made by different brands, such as castrol. I used one from my favourite oil mob, and I'm quite happy I followed their advice. From what I'm told by them the dextron is not quite the ideal fluid, used because it does the job and is easy to top up at service.

My pwr steering pump is leaking from the back of the main pump. Its not any of the connections, or the reservoir. AAAArgh, is there something I missed or is this 'throw away and replace the pump' time?

from memory (when my mate showed me) the back of the VP pump has a big circlip that holds the ass of the pump together- should be a seal behind it. (I think)
