Just wondering what is the legal thickness of the rear brake rotors? Mine are realy thin and i have to change them. I have got some brake rotors off a wrecked VN. They dont look too bad. They have hardly got a lip on them from wear. They are about 9.5mm thick. And would it be worth machining them? or just putting them on with new pads? I got quoted $16.50 each rotor to get them machined. Is it realy worth it? cheers.

I thought the minimum legal thickness was 16mm?
9.5mm isnt even a cm
The problem with brakes that thin is that heat can easily warp them and affect their performance and they can even come apart, crack, split and shatter.

I think its 10mm for rears and 20mm for fronts. I just bought new discs all round for mine. RDA brakes are pretty cheap for slotted discs mine cost $100 each for fronts and $75 each for rears.
Im not a complete idiot, some parts are still on backorder!
vn front 20mm and rear 8.5mm shoulda just bought new they only like 70 for normal dba..
ok thanks guys. Well i got these rotors for free so i thought instead of paying for new ones i will just put these in because they still look pretty good. The ones i have in my car now are really low. Maybe 5mm?? And the ones i got off the wreck are about 9.5mm. How much are new stock rotors? i dont want slotted rotors or anything. just normal stock ones. Im just realy low on money atm.
edit: just read that they are $70 for rotor. thanks dmitch. But i cant realy afford that at the moment. So do you think the second hand ones will be ok to put in?

the other thing with having under size rotors is if they get too worn down the pistons fall out of the caliper and all the fluid leaks out of the master cylinder then you have no brakes
Stato on the inside, berlina on the out side,5ltr under the bonnet, stockies all round...........that thing has to be a sleeper

Thats why i wana change them. Its only the rear that are bad. Mainly from burnouts. When my car got stolen they did heaps of burnouts and now brakes are stuffed. So do you think the 2nd hand ones will be ok. Because i cant afford new ones atm. I also have to buy new pads. Should i machine them or just put them on? cheers

Get them machined too...
Brakes are something you should bother spending the money on though...
The brake rotors will have the minimum thickness stamped into them, just clean them up a bit and you should see it there.
VN rear is 8.5MM
Vn Front is 20MM
I would reccomend getting them machined first tho.
Alright cool. thanks for all your input guys. Tomorrow ill clean them up and see what i can find. I havnt put them on yet. Dont have the cash to get them machined. But hopefull payday i will get them machined and new pads. I just got some new bendex pads for the fronts and there so dusty. Im always cleaning my front wheels now. I liked my old pads. They had hardly any brake dust but i dont know what pads they were. it didnt say on them. What pads make low dust?

Since asbestos has been banned from brake pad material just about every pad on the market has a higher output of dust, Lucas is probally the most dusiest pad out there and normally bendix is at a acceptable level. Bendix "GCT" material is pretty new on the market but already have pretty positive feedback regarding dust levels. All depends how much money you want to spend, PM me if you like and i could recomend someone in Fyshwick ACT for you to see.
I would recommend Bendix GCT's. Been running mine for a month or two now and there is almost no brake dust on the mags. And I only wash the car about once a month. As far as wear is concerned, I havent noticed any yet but its probably too early to tell anyway.
Also you should be aware that the Bendix pads dont need bedding in but if you get new discs you will need to bed them in. I wasnt getting very good performance out of my new brakes until I bedded the discs in.

this post is like 2 months old why do u bring it back up again, argghh. annoys me so much when people do this stuff , he has obviously sorted out his rotor dilema.
In case someone else has the same problem and looks this thread up.
