a scraper is usually the best way.. something nice and flat and sharp. but not too sharp or it will loose it's edge too quick.

an aluminium paint scraper is good, because it's softer than the cast iron block, it may need resharpening every now and then but meh, a small price to pay to ensure you don't score the sealing surface. Once you've got most of it off, hit it with some 600 grit wet & dry paper and finally a bit of clean rag and some solvent of your choice (I'm a fan of turpentine personally). Just before you put it back together again, hit it with some more 600 grit to remove any corrosion that's started to form while it's been apart, maybe a final go with some 1200 grit just to be sure, to be sure, to be sure! Then whack her back together. If it leaks the bugger's gotta be warped because you know it was clean.

Hence why I said 600 and 1200 grit. You don't exactly remove a lot of metal with it, hell it barely moves old gasket gunk.

Permatex make a spray on gasket remover. Spray it on, leave it for a bit, usually it scrapes off pretty easy afterwards. Snap On make a good gasket scraper, if you can be bothered forking out for one

The spray on gasket remover works pretty well, the good stuff is kinda expensive though. It's very useful if you've got a lot of baked on gasket to remove.

Yeah, it is. Best part is though you can let it sit for a while, so you can go get pissed or whatever, come back in the morning, attack the gasket with your scraper, and watch it peel off

Old blades off a power hacksaw sharpened up what ive used for years.Cut 70mm off one end and sharpen it like a chisel single bevel stay sharp for years and the round end fits nice in ya hand just dont heat it to much when you cut and sharpen it or it will lose its hardness get it as flat and sharp as you can
