    Default crank jamming VP

whats the best way to jam the crank in a VP commodore? i heard you can jam it by taking the starter motor off and jamming something into the flywheel? is there any other way besides taking the sump off.

    its automatic.

Take the starter motor off and jam the ring gear by engaging a tooth with a flat piece of metal. Works a treat.

It's possible that the puller may have distorted the thread. Never fear though, even if the thread is munted it can be rectified (I think). If the bolt just won't bite then you may have to retap the thread, this can be done in situe, there's plenty of room. Never done it on a crank but I can't think of any real reason why it wouldn't work. Seeing as it's probably only the top of the thread that's squashed, I'd be getting in there trying to clean it up enough to get the bolt to bite before doing anything drastic though.

Hmm, dunno. Try it with a long bit of metal next time though. Easier to retrieve if it goes walkabouts. Sounds like this is turning into a bit of a bastard job for you.

yeah it is. hmmmm the bolt does bite i got it in a bit but i cant screw it in anymore easily i need to use force which is why i need to lock crank to get it moving again.... im tihnking if i jam the crank and then use a big breaker bar it will be ok? as long as i get it in? is this the smart option or should i do something else first?

Well that's interesting, if the puller had stuffed the thread it probably would have squashed the top, so if the bolt is going in a turn or so and then stopping I'd be getting the torch and looking very closely at why it's stopping, could be something as simple as a piece of junk caught in the thread. I'd be jamming the crank to put the bolt back in anyway, because you're gonna have to jam it to get the bolt torqued up right.
