Just about to pickup a white VN for 300 bucks with 270,000 on it so im thinkin of goin nuts with some mods.
I was wondering if there's any way to change the tail lights so they're the same as VS lights, then i would probably put the clear ones in cause they look badass. I was thinking i'd have to probably modify VS rear quarter panels to fit?
How much could i modify the exhaust with whats there? I know if you change it a certain way it becomes illegal, but i'd still like to know just incase i decide to do it anyway.
Im thinkin of dumpin it by cuttin the springs, what are the problems with this?
I was maybe thinking of puttin a V8 in it, what would fit, vn/vp/vs SS engine? Whats the cheapest i could get away with this and would i need to change the tranny?
vs altezza lights on a vn? please dont attempt that.
exhaust - 2.5 inch catback with no resonator sounds good
springs - dont cut them. only tightass tools do that

Errr as for the lights I probably wouldn't... You'd end up spending a fair bit, wouldnt you need a whole new rear end pretty much??
Personally, I think VN Tinted rear lights look the best (not a fan of the clear ones)
If youre picking it up for 300, sell it for as much as possible, depending on condition, and buy a vr.
Also, I've gone through the whole "I want a nice 6.0lt in my vt" but yeah... not gonna happen lol. If you can't do it yourself its gonna cost WAY too much...
Anyway, it all depends on what you're willing to spend.. Good luck with it anyway.
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!

don't cut the springs, spend the $350 for a set and do it right. you cna do anything to the exhaust as long as you keep the cat and the pipe exits out the rear of the car. be cheaper to by a V8 rather then do an engine change as you would need to rewire etc. no way the lights would fit either unless you change all the sheet metal on the VN. not really anything you wanted to hear. there are some threads here on mods forthe V6, check the V6 modifying section

ummmmm vs lights on a vn? i think that would look ok (more trouble then its worth because vn ones look tuff as they are so why change?) BUT if you are going to..... pleassssssse for the love of god dont get the altezza's... just tint the normal lights.... if your going to do that, go buy a civic.... THEM ALTEZZA'S SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE FOR HOLDENS! and as for exaust i heard same as stocky that no resonator (little round muffler thingy at the back of the car) and suspension, just got buy springs.... ive only recently relised that they are only like 200 and something a FULL set.... and if you dont have the money for shockers.... do that later![]()
Yeh i reckon the VN lights look outdated, i love the look of the VS tail lights, and no i dont want to buy a VS. Although unless i can be bothered doing it and it's not gonna cost much, i probably wont do it, just a thought really. And whats wrong with the altezza lights? They look badass. Futuristic or something.
### the V8, if im gonna have a V8 ill just buy a SS, i know next to nothing about cars.
Ill prob cut the resonater out.
Ill prob just cut the springs, my mate has cut springs and he has never had a problem.
you can get those white/clear lights for vn's now so no need to modify the rear end.
We got rep back, yaaay!
dont cut the springs. sure enugh your mates never had problems but bad bad bad things can happen just spend some cash gettin some king springs/pedders suspension components .clear lights are for rice burning jap crap and should be left on rice burners they just dont suit a commdore .dark lights look wikid especially with some nice tint on the windows. and as for the v8 well id just stick with the 6 for a while do some light mods. (cold air, chip, throttle body, exhaust. K&N) and watch the mighty 3.8 go
the only thing i have ever thought of doing to a vn that is the same as a vr/vs's is cut out the rear gaurds so they are curved. but i don't know how it would look. vn's have straight lines where vr/vs. the lights are too different. vr/vs's are rounder at the back..
i would consider swaping the bonnet and front guards bumper lights etc to a VR but its so much effort and when my bro bought his vr for 1600 i dont see the point of spending all that money on a vn
Yeh i've thought about rounding out the rear wheel arches, but im starting to think thats what makes a VN a VN an im starting to like it. I wouldn't go to the effort though an i like em better the way they are.
Clear lights for VN's??? The only ones i've seen are the clear ones that look fogged up, i reckon they look shit. Unless some new ones have come out i dont know about? Could there be ones of another car that might fit?
And i dont care if they're meant for jap cars i reckon they look sik.
What could go wrong with cut springs!!!???
do a search on the forum about cut springs, or this thread will just become a bitch session like most of the others.
difference between a vn and a vr/s bonnet, jsut look at the 2, both completely different bar the hinges. look in the my ride section at peoples vr's, you will see the difference.
I did a search for "cut springs" i just got 100s of threads that had the word "springs" in them. Could you please just list the problems, it couldn't be more simpler.
Cut springs = insufficient travel, can often hit the bumpstops, bouncy ride, also can adversly affect the handling and balance of the car. You'd probably wear the shocks out a bit quicker too. I'm not sure if you suffer camber issues as I've never cut the springs in a car, but my mates have done it and ride quality and handling is rubbish.

FOR SALE - VL COMMODORE
mate seriously its not worth changing them over unless you work for west coast customs, will be more bs then its worth...
and with the resinator i suggest going to an exaust shop and get it done right, look around on the forum and you will see roughly what they charge to take it out and weld some new pipe of your choice in there....
read everyone of them and it will tell you how dangerous they can be and alot of them will turn into a debate... btw ill give you a tip... if your going to cut springs dont advertise it on the forum because alot of people dont like it and it will only make you unpopular (in most cases) so yeah have fun with your vn and cant wiat to see it

You will create weak points in the springs. Stock springs are designed and engineered to be that height, and to cut them alters the physical limitations of the springs.
You'll effect the load rating. The springs in your car are sufficient for the weight of your car...cut a coil or two off, and the load rating is no long sufficient. Hit a bump hard enough and you'll stuff your car, put your diff into your wheel arch or something, or just wait while your springs develop cracks.
Handling on cut springs is horrible. Understeer will be a bitch, hit a corner hard and you wont be going around the corner, rather straight on. The strut is designed to operate at certain heights under a certain load so if you are on a sweeping bend on a freeway no probs but around town you ditch in for a hard right weight transfers left struts bottom out all weight is on wheel then you have understeer. This is why lowered springs are heavy duty, because they need to take pressure off the shock.
Your car will be bouncing all over the place, bottoming out at speed when hit bumps etc. Thats why lowered springs are stiff...
The worst part... is when the spring falls out. Lets say you go over a bump at speed... Cut springs will compress 100% because they are designed to have 1 or 2 more coils (whatever you cut off), the springs wont just fall out, they will become dislodged which can be VERY Dangerous obviously... And I would NOT want to be in the car when a spring falls out or becomes dislodged or does not lock back in.
Cut springs will reduce your suspension and travel, and you will constantly be hitting the bump stops and be doing damage to other suspension parts on your car. In the long run it WILL cost more.
Also they are illegal, and illegal for a reason. Remember that.
$190 for a full set of King Springs...which will sit better, ride better, handle better, be much safer and they're not defectable.. For $190 thats alot of benefits... $190 for safety, peice of mind, handling and performance and looks.... A cheap, tightass idiot might opt for cut springs, but a car enthusiast would not.
Remember its not just YOUR safety and well being you are putting at risk, but also the safety and well being of every man, woman and child that is on the road around you. You may not value your safety, but other people do.
that pretty much explains what you will get when talking about spring cutting, ITS AS BAD AS POLITICS! :O hahahahaha![]()
Thankyou Vn2nV thats an excellent reply. I think even though it's a 300 dollar car and the springs will nearly cost the same ill still go for the springs lol
as everybody said don't put altezza lights if u wanna be called names then fine do it i personally hate them i just wanted to have a say sorry haha if u want them crappy altezza lights buy a vr/vs
