O.k my vn takes about 3-5 sec to start, the CAS is new! When the car does start it smells of petrol and idle rough for about 15 sec, then comes right - any ideas?
i suspect your fuel tank breather hoses are perished. i think there have been a couple of threads about it.

Checked your charcoal canister? I think they operate on vacuum with the VN's, maybe there is an issue there.
How do I locate this? and what am I looking for?
on the vp it's towards the front of the engine bay on the drivers side, it's a round black cannister.
check the connections to this (there should be hoses to the top) and follow these back as far as you can.
i recall the gregory's mentioning that if you take it off and shake it, it shouldn't rattle.
any more than that i couldn't say
well the reason it would smell like petrol is because it takes 3-5 sec to start, so your injectors are flowing in order to start the car, but it wont kick over and there's some excess fuel there which you would be smelling.
as for why its taking that long to start, what does it do, just keep cranking and after a while kick over?
could be as simple as a battery needing replacement.
Yesterday I removed the hose from the little black canister that runs to the top of the motor and it started sweet and run smooth, it doesn't smell of petrol. So today after work I will replace the canister and hopefully thats where the problem is, otherwise I'm guessing it will be somewhere else in the line, as for the battery It's all good! last night I took my car for a run (50km) withour the little hose attached and it run sweet infact it had the power that I noticed was missing over the last two months 0-100 6.3 sec, not bad for a 89
