hey guy.. the problems with the vn never stop.. i have a loud ass rattle coming from under the bonnet, the best way to describe it is i reeli reeli sloppy piston sound or a wobbly pully soundit gets worse when the engines hotter, and usually kicks in at running temp.. now ive been told its the same sound you get from a broken harmonic balancer, but whats baffleing is that the balencer is completely undamaged, no cracks nothing.. i was wondering if anyone has some places to look for the problem?? its hard to define exactly where the sound is coming from without getting ur ear torn off in the acc belt. ive replace the tensioner bracket and pully sofar

There are many places it could be coming from. Get under the bonnet one day and give everything a little wobble to see if anything is loose that shouldn't be. It may be a snapped bracket, or more simply somethings not as tight as it should be.

is/was it the tensioner pulley?
When my Harmonic Balancer was buggered it still looked perfect and you couldn't feel any movement even with the auxilliary belt off. It made a really loud rattling noise that started off intermittent but got worse very quickly.
I took it to a mechanic who had a listen with a stethoscope thing and told me pretty much straight away that it was the Harmonic Balancer.
Could it be rattly hydralic lifters? I have that problem, when the oil heats up, it becomes thinner and then theres less of a "buffer" of oil between the lifter and the cam.
Ah, nothing like a Datsun 120 WHY!
dont count out a broken torque converter bolt. i had a really bad rattling sound that seemed to be coming from the right side of the engine, then a few weeks ago the engine seized. asked around and was told it was a bottom end bearing. bought another engine, when taking the tranny off there was only one bolt left two had snapped of the fly wheel and put it out of whack this seized the engine.

yer ive heard many different things, i was told it was the harmonic balancer, the tensioner pulley, the water pump, too much play in the steering pump, bottom end bearing etc etc.. ive heard em all! ive had a listen with that stethoscope thingy and noone, without pulling the engine to bits can tell me what it is.. but yer if the balancer can still make noise even if in one piece then i should replace that.. even at my proce there not cheap.. it does souund very pulley related, and is getting worse gradually.. ill try running it without the belt and see whats up then.. cheers guys

Timming chain slapping around? Is it a metalicy spound changed by revs?

Yeah the old timing chains make a heap of noise enough to trigger the knock sensor and retard the timing my mates vn timing chain sounds horrible can hear it from a fair way away everybody looks when you drive up town like the motors gonna fall out on the street in front of them.
Stick your head under the car when it's rattling, and try to see how far back the sound is coming from. If it's coming from a little further back, it could be a loose/cracked drive plate - they get frequently diagnosed as ****ed harmonic balancers or big end bearings, and sound similar.

Sounds good to me.
I have the same rattle noise, starts around 1800-2000rpm and goes to about 2300rpm.
Sounds like the chain, but I replaced that, and it isnt.
I replaced water pump, tensioner pulley, CAS... no fix.
It sounds like its coming from further back in the engine, im suspecting torque converter, or now driveplate... both of which i dont want to change.
One thing that throws me off the is that whenever the harmonic balancer is removed and reinstalled (chain replaced, CAS replaced) the sound reduces or almost disappears for a couple of hours then returns.

um yer mine does sound like its coming from the front.. can i just say that ive been listening to the engine for about a month now!! its not like i havnt been tryna listen from all directions, under ontop left right.. if i had say it was coming from anywhere id say waterpump area/ behind the water pump area
Don't blame me, It's that damn percadan..

If its behind the waterpump id say timing chain and/or tensioner have you changed the oil and filter lately. Also about the timing chains you can buy this chain from an engineers shop but its not the same looks the same is the same but wears very quick and has a tendency to snap.Wonder if different suppliers supply different grades of chain to auto shops.
If it's been pretty consistent for a month now without getting louder, It's probably not the drive plate - or it would have smashed by now ^^

i'd also go with the timing chain on this one. they can sound like a death rattle. does it run a little rough, irratic maybe, more vibrations?
