Well its alot easier to take the tranny off and on with the engine out. but its alot more involved. i had to snaped torque converter bolts so i had to take the transmision out, it was started last friday. i took the engine and everything out. its easy enough doing that. getting the bloody thing in was the trouble, with three guys it took nearly 2 hours jut to get the engine back in its mounts. if i was u i would leave the engine in. just losen the engine mount bolts this will tip the engine back a bit give u more room to work with. its guna be tricky not much room but i would give that a shot first. good luck mate.

If you have a hoist then its not that hard otherwise its a mission.... You dont need to take the engine out.

I pulled my old one out and put anther one in. Wasn't that hard, i just put the front of the car on car stand undid everything and then sat the auto on a trolly jackand worked the box out and down. put the new one on trolly jack and fitted it back into place. it took me a full day of drinkin and screwin around but its not that hard. its just fiddlerly, the biggest trouble i had was getting the oil lines coming out of the box off. i end up cutting them and taking them off when the box was out then joining them with the rubber piping that is up the front.
    Have fun

onethingto watch for is when you drop the transmission mount and engine leans back the TB can hit the firewall. one solution is to put a piece wood between the sump and the subframe/kframe. you should be able to do it without removing the entire engine/tranny from the vehicle
