ive got a 1989 VN she started up fine today drove all up around 1.5 hours within that time stopping and starting the motor 3 times than i got home after 20mins i went to go for a drive started the car it ran like it was missing than stalled started again with same symtoms after i restarted it again it just stalled and will not start the motor does turn and when the ignition is turned on the fuel pump sounds to be working does anyone have a clue what might be wrong?
i replaced the CAS a few months ago for a different reason

Tomorrow doesn't look good either.

thanks for the reply 1vngal, i replaced the fuel pump today and just tested the spark i put a screw driver in the cap and earthed it to the chassie i have no spark any clue where to start?
where abouts would i find the DFI?
The DFI unit is under the coils - front left side of engine as you look at it with the bonnet open.
Have you got any fault codes from the ECU? (using a paper clip and reading the engine light pulses) 12 is all good. eg 1 flash pause then 2 flashes.
This fault finding is described very well in the VN section already. Someone may know how to post a link for you.
This was the first bit to die on my car when I had all sorts of stalling problems. I then had to replace several bits to get the car back to normal.
Other things to look at are the car computer (ECU), map sensor and the connections/plugs under the bonnet - and one other thing may help is the vac hose from the map sensor the the back of the throttle body - it can split.

i just done the test and i get 1 flash a pause followed by 2 flashes i looked this up and all computer system is ok what next?![]()
Pull the DFI unit apart (coils off the top) and look for burnt bits.
It has six wires inside I think and are not that long.
So open with care. I dont know how you can test it. See if a mate will do a swap with you.

A fault code for the DFI or CAS will not always show. The way to diagnose which one is at fault takes a bit of messing around. When I get home I will see if I can find it & post it up.
Your best bet though would be to borrow a known good DFI & see if it is the problem.
thanks for the replys, i done a quick search and seen on a web site how to test the DFI i need to remove the coil than use either a multimeter (no longer have one nice mates!) or use a low volt tester pen with the light inside of it i will give it ago soon and let you's know how it goes im ment to jump those wires than crank the car over if it lites up its working if not no good i also got a quote $50 for a second hand DFI/coil from the wreckers and replaced the CAS a couple of months ago gotta say the DFI/coil has lasted a long time i have owned this car going on 7 years and never replaced these parts
ok i went and done some testing the DFI is sparking accordingly to the link below just one problem when i turn the ignition "on" the wires for number 1 cylinder light up the tester pen continous the other two coloured wires flash on and off as the motor kicks over now i have found another what seems to be a problem i removed spark plugs number 1 and number 3 i replaced the spark plugs back in the leads and turned the motor over and no spark at all what could be wrong? im leaning towards the coil it's self is retaining the spark and not passing it on or my spark plugs are shot i have tryed putting a screw driver in the lead than holding it a few mm above the chassie to see a spark but nothing

You may be on a winner with the coils.

i tryed another coil pack with DFI its for a VS-VT car still wont start also tryed the old CAS i removed (removed it from the start for no reason damn electricians) im waiting to get a multimeter than i will test the original coil, leads, plugs
can anyone think of anything else it could be?
If the injectors are not getting power car will not start.
If you have spark to plugs and fuel to the rails it could be your injector wiring.

i just checked the leads and coil with a multimeter i come up with the following results
*leads* 20k ohms setting
cyl 1: 5.51
cyl 2: 8.47
cyl 3: 7.06
cyl 4: 8.47
cyl 5: 9.18
cyl 6: 9.82
*coil* 20k ohms setting
jumping number 3 + 6 read 14.35 ohms
jumping number 2 + 5 read nothing!
jumping number 4 + 1 read 14.35 ohms
i tested the other VS/VT coil i have and jumping the above all gave me a steady 5 ohms readings on all 6 terminals so im assuming my coil or DFI is stuffed? need a quick reply if possable as shops close in an hour or two and wont be open untill after xmass

i went and tested the middle coil 2+5 again
on my multimeter it goes
200
2000
20k
200k
20m
well i finally got a reading from the middle coil and it is reading 5.5 on the 20m setting no other settings would work i will pick up a coil/DFI from the wreckers tomorrow (if open) if anyone has info just post it here
