Default 5 Speed Manual gear oil change

When and how should I change the gear oil on my 5 speed 92 VP?

Also when I change from first to second there seems to be a little more noise (rough sound from the gearbox)compared to when I change to other gears, second to third for example. Any comments?

2 hex drive plugs (use allen key to get them out) on driver side of box lower one drains the dexron 3 oil out and upper one is the filler you fill it until the level is high enough so the oil comes out of hole. You need some sort of pump or oil syringe to get it in and its a bit tight for room if you are doing it on the ground.

Another way i found to fill it up if you dont have a pump (not sure if this is 100% ok, but i done it and no probs) is remove the shifter unit from the center console and fill it up slowly from there. Seemed to be easier and worked fine. You may have to drill out the metal plate thats pop rivited to the floor to get to the 2 bolts at the rear, and just rivit them back in. Its pretty simple.

Since most oil bottles have spouts its not a problem to get the oil in. I used shell 75-90 synthetic oil in mine an it made the shift heaps better. Holden says to use ATF but both 5 speeds ive got had normal gear oil in them.

i had trouble getting into 2nd for a long time when i first got my VN. it had transmission oil in it, i put ATF in it and then changed it again after a few weeks to really clean it out. it's been good now fora few years
