i want to paint my centre console in my vn, just want plain silver. the vn interior is so outdated, just want to make it looks a bit better, what do i need to paint it, whats the best paint, do i need to sandpaper or primer? what do u guys reckon and have any of you done this?
ok, you got 2 choices.
you can go for the textured silver look, it will still feel the same as the normal plastic, but will be silver. go buy some wax and grease remover/prepsol and some silver vinyl spray paint, clean the plastic the spray it with the vinyl spray, it will soak into the plastic and stay silver and not wear off unless it wasnt cleaned properly.
VHT and SEPTONE seem to be the most common brands.
option 2, is get some prepsol/wax n grease remover, some plastic primer and some good quality silver paint and maybe some clearcoat aswell. and maybe even some spray putty if you dont feel like sanding.
sand plastic smooth if you feel like it, clean it, spray it with primer, spray with spray putty of you dont want to sand, sray with paint, as many coats as you want when it looks good, then some clear coat if you want.
this is all just a rough guide.
i've been thinking of doing this too, i'd probably go with option 1, but the thing is there's 2 screw holes i want to putty, how will this affect the spray in that area?
i used that plastic primer and some kind of spray can paint, and then went over it with some $3 spray can of silver paint from bunnings. that silver has lasted over a year now

If you're interested, I chose to take it all out, give it a good thorough wash, and do 6/7 light layers of VHT vynil paint. My advice: do very thin layers, but do a lot of them. Don't even expect to completely cover the surface with your first four layers. Vynil paint runs easily, and will scratch off if you build it up too thick. From blue to black, here's the result, and it's lasted me 8 months sofar.

i was probably gonna go with a dull metalic (gunmetal) and then do the same for the area around the gauges,(under the plastic)
still not sure if i'll do the lid of the centre console glove box
this is mine. i did it over a year ago now and its still perfect. I painted it with some silver acrylic paint. And a couple coats of clear over the top so it doesn't scratch. I did not use primer or anything. you dont realy need it. just make sure its realy clean before you paint it.

Just use acrylic. Worked realy good on mine. The colour i used is called quicksilver. And you dont need primer. Just maybe some clear to protect it a bit.

i did my console in my old magna but fingerprints made it go a different colour so i just wanted some advice so u reckon autobahn? ill have to go have a look , and coolvn i saw ur car today at tuggers, so u reckon acrylic hmm to many decisions
and what does primer do? will it help no matter what choice i make and do i need to sand if i use primer?
Yeah i was parked across from goodguys haha. Primer just makes the paint stick to whatever your painting on. Didnt need it for mine. And i didnt sand mine. I just made sure it was realy clean. I got the acrilic silver from supercheap. it was about $10. Its in a pretty small can. But its been over a year and its still nice and shinny so it worked good for me.

Make sure you do it on a warm day or in warm ambient temp or else will not come out good especially if you are applying clear coats.
I did it on my VS on a sunny afternoon, it came out great!!!!
Mine will be done all the bottom half of the dash again aswell i just plan to have a slight sand primer and spray i know its not needed but im doing it
