Has anyone here ever removed a sump off a VP commodore without a hoist? if so how do you go about it
to remove the sump u dont need a hoist. just use a set ramps or axle stands. you have to remove the crossmember to get to the sump not the easiest of jobs with all the oil and shit everywhere
but the engine is mounted on the cross member
you can go buy an engine cradle, don't know what they are worth exactly but i'll be guessing aroung 200-300 bucks, it's a betal bar which sits across the front fenders and has an adjustable hanger to support the motor. then you can remove the cross member.
But you might just be able to unbolt the motor and lift it up a bit, thats what i did, but i had a hoist and put a stand under the front of the box/bell housing and lowered the car.
Or the another option is to lift the front onto a set of jackstands then get a jack under the front of the box/bell housing and lift the motor enough to get the sump out, a bit of a prick but you might be able to do it.
One of my mates used a susposively 30kg rated roof hook to support one of his motors to remove it. lol, you can try to support the motor with a structure with a rope/chain or something.
Soon to be back on the road, Turbo VG.
i did get the sump of my VN V6 without lifting the engine or dropping the subframe but i did have the box of the back at the time doinga clutch change. i undid the sump, then reached inside the sump and unbolted the oil pickup and then got the sump out. bugger of a job though to unbolt that pick-up. really need a person with small hands and a double jointed wrist. but not much use to you unless you've got the box off
