    Default Rattling, Timing chain/Tensioner??

hey, for the last 2 weeks my cars made a funny rattling sound round 1500-2000rpm.. now my engine mounds are shagged (the rubber) they need replacing but they still hold

now i dont think its the timing chain, but my mates dad recons it could be (he heard me drive off)

it only readlly does it when cold, could be a number of things like manifolds touching something..

    what normally rattles on VNs??

Timming chain - almost 100% of the time. It's a metalic hollow sound that changes with revs. When someone can hear you from 1 street away - timming chain.

On average, how much does it usually cost to have a timing chain replaced? Because I'm pretty sure I have the same problem.

well mine dosnt do it all the time, i think it might be my pod filter knocking round,

i will investigate, how much is a new timing chain worth?? is it the tensioner or chain that fail???

Chain stretches and the tensioner wears out. Gets a bit of a slap going when the load comes off the engine.

I think it cost me around $250.00 last time ($130.00 for the chain n tensioner).

anyway the timing chain isnt that hard to get to.. just remove water pump and timing cover

I used to do that sort of work on my cars but the back just dosent last the distance. Bummer but age catches up with us all at some time.

So yep a timming chain is not hard to do and can be completed in a few hours.

If you are going to the bother you may as well put in a set of adjustable timing gears and dial it in properly. It takes a bit of effort and some specialised tools but its a very cheep power gain if you are doing the gears anyway.
