    Default bloooody rattle guns!

hey, was changing all my tyres last night, (using the RIGHT sized socket set)

i couldnt undo one of the bolts on the front passengerside wheel, i was using a huge torque wrench anyway, i gave it that much torque that i pretty much stripped the bolt using the right sized tool... so now my car is sitting out there with 3x15" rims and 1x17" rim on...

what can i do to get it off??

think a tyre shop could remove the wheel nut??
this stupid thing was done up that tight i dont know if super man could un do it... now who would do this??? im just really annoyed (supid repair shop)

    any ideas???

I know there are some tools that looks like sockets, however, as you undo it, it grips into the nut, its got teeth in it that grip the rounded nut...You did round it didn't you? Its a handy little socket set...Most tool shops should have em...

How do you round off a nut if you are using the right sized socket? They only round off when they slip.

take it 2 the last shop that touched the wheels and make them get it off, i work in a shop and do up wheel nuts with a rattle gun, but its wise to start them first and only a little crack with the gun and they are right, make the last nugget who touched it get it off that way he will learn, ive been trying to tell the other apprentice at work not to kill the ass out of the wheel nuts with a rattle gun for ages.
when you get to the shop make the clown who did it undo it with a wheel brace and see how tight hed like to do them up from now on, if he says he cant tell him to find a way coz it aint your problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

exactly the reason why its wise to start wheel nuts or any nuts or bolts by hand b4 doing them up with any air tool, dude seriously take the car to them and tell them u want it off, also a new stud and wheel nut and tell them its their cost and nothing to do with you

you may have to break the stud to get the nut off if its rounded off to bad.

put the socket back on, tighten he wheelnut to buggery and it will shear the stud off. then just replace the stud when the wheel is off

Why are you using a torque wrench to undo things? Given how tight you say it is, you're probably exceeding the load range of the torqe wrench which could damage it. Hokay, if the nut is rounded, get yourself a cheap (expendable) 11/16 inch, or 18mm socket, or better yet an impact socket in one of those sizes and hammer it onto the offending wheelnut till it will go no further. If it's not rounded just use your normal 19mm socket. Put a ratchet onto that there socket (or better yet proper breaker bar) and put a couple of feet of steel pipe over the handle of the ratchet. Now haul on that bugger until something gives way. Hopefully it will be the nut.

If you think this is a difficult experience, you should try changing a wheel on a ten tonne truck out in the field, that's an experience I don't wanna go through again.

got a pic of the nut?

if the nuts dissapear into a hole in the rim then you will have problems. if you can still get to the nut grind it so 2 sides are flat then put a shifter on it.

we had to do that when some wanker stripped a lock nut

I put a brand new set of vt internationals and new nuts on 2 months before i had a major rear ender. Part of the repairs was to replace one of the tyres. last week i went to take off the wheel to get to the fuel filter and one of the 'new' nuts was so badly stripped it is almost a circle.

    Get your whel brace...

If it's the right size nut, get it so it's on the 1 thats just a bit bigger..

Bang it on and twist... Once you get it off... take the rest of.. wheel off.

Wind it back onto the stud and pull it off the brace otherwise it will be hard to get out

    Hope this helps

Gonna sound suss but how did you go getting it off?? HAHAHAHA FOr shits and giggles my mate works for a tyre store (bob jane) and they have to start off with rattle gun then go to torque rench to finish the job. Saw one new guy yelled at there once for breaking 3 wheel nuts from over tighting and wrong socket so for the next week he had to start with a wheel brace then use the torque rench. He learnt his lesson and got saw arms in the process!!

Plan A: Get a socket that is just a tiny bit too small for the nut (1mm or so), bash it on with a big ass hammer, put a big ass ratchet into the socket and take it off.

Plan B: Get an angle grinder, grind 4 or 6 sides onto it so a smaller socket will fit.

    Have fun

when you did this. did you use a straight sided socket. or a ribbed one. if you didnt' use a straight sided one try that.
all my wheel nuts are ones that require a key in the inside. i cracked one early this year and couldn't get it undone. so the other day i just drilled the stuff out. just need good quality drill bits..
