hey pplz, just wondering im looking at getting rid of the power steering, and i need to get some sort of pulley or something, just wondering if anyone can help, and im pretty sure i can use a VL rack and steeringshaft
why would u do that?
lol, waiting for someone to say that, well actually waiting for someone to reply, well the main reason i want to go manual steer is to get rid of all the power steer fluid leaking all the time, well i have fixed the pump for a little while until i can get it to manual steeer
cheers, nick, just using gf account
by memory you can use the vl steering shaft, different.
what you have to do is get a vn manual steering item that was fitted into some of the vn's over in new zealand.
i used to have that problem, u can get something that you put in ur power steering fluid, can't remember what its called an it kind of seals up the inside of the pipe n stops most leaks, if thats all thats the problem maybe you try something like that i'll see if i can find out what the stuff is for you if your interested.
Yeah i put some stopleak stuff in my power steering. It went from toping it up every week, to topping it up ever few months so im happy with that.
Australia. Love it or leave it
thats just crazy...why get rid of power steering?? your going to have to start working out at the gym just to be able to park your car! lol
fixing a leak would be easier and cheaper than converting to a different system. if your still leaking power steering fluid after the pump has been re-sealed, look into doing the hoses...especially the hi-pressure one. hoses dont last forever, they get hard and brittle from heat and will loose their ability to seal at joins, even when you've done the hose clamp up tight.
well am thinking about the VL rack and using the VL inetermediate shaft on the steering column, and it actually wouldnt be that hard to steer as the gear ratios in the steering box are different to power steer, i drove my car for a bout 5 days with now power steer and its not that hard at all, i can do on the spot turns with one hand still, would just be heaps easier and less hassles to be without power steer, and also i think i need an idler of some sort to get the belt going around or something, thanks guys, im actually getting somewhere now
it would be like driving a kingswood 6 with bit betta ride more grunt n a shitload smoother lol
yep vks is about spot on there but i was thinking it would be more like a VB but a lot better and more comfort,
you just need a vl manual steer rack....
direct bolt in...
then maybe holden have a belt for no power steer? I know they have one for no a/c....
na they dont make a belt for no power steer i dotn think as the tensioner needs the power steer pulley to keep it tight, and yeah it probably is cheaper to get a new pump, but i still trying to change it to manual steer
read what he said he reckons one handed on the spot turning in a commodore with broken power steering.. i doubt it. BUMP

I think manual steer isnt a bad option if ur willing do to it, it means no more maintenance and u will get buff while driving haha
Lost a belt a few weeks ago and was barely able to turn the car into the driveway and im not exactly a small guy.
But after hearing how you were able to still turn it easily it makes me think that maybe there is something wrong or a bit dodgy with my steering. It's not leaking anywhere and is full of fluid, any other reasons why it'd be so hard?
