Hey guys just wondering i was thinking of buying a vn ss manual 5 speed and selling my vp 6 banger and do that up. What my plans were was to tune the engine do all the body work the interior should be pretty nice fix a bit of it up then sound system then i was thinkin of like adding cold air intake and hopefully supercharging it. Is this all possible many of my mates have mixed opinions i just thought i would get your views on it cheers.
if i had the cahnce to buy my first car again, id get an vnss for sure! fortunatly theres alot of second hand parts for vns out there so u shouldnt have ne problem with fixing the interior and panels etc.. you will find that theres more than enough power with a stock 5L after driving a v6! but before going out and getting a cold air intake and supercharging it make sure your happy with how the car looks and runs.. CAI's arent all they are cracked up to be, they only add power to high performanced setups, they dont do shit on a stock car.. i rekn just get the stock engine up to good running condition and leave it cause they go! after you have done everything else like sound system and all that then you should look at working it.. if you try to bite off more than u can chew than youl run out of $$$ and have it sitting in the driveway
Don't blame me, It's that damn percadan..
If you ask me, that stuff rots your brain...
And now a word from our new sponsor.. Percadan? oh crap!
my first commodore was 4 cyl VH, my second V8 VH.... injected. i drive a manual VN V6 now but still get that V8 itch everytime i hear one ( i still got the V8 but it's going through a very slow rebuild). if it's in reasonably good nic i'd get it definitly with it being a manual.....![]()

I'm almost thinking of doing the same mate - buying a VN SS. I'd do it, but the car I have already has over $5.5g poured into it, and it was my Dad's, so I'm not selling. In all likelihood my next car will be a VN SS though.
Manuals are the go. The autos are too slow.

like many people have said in this thread, like us. we all bought 3.8lt vn's. if i had the choice and had of thought a bit more for my first car i would of got an vn ss. just the way a vn v6 makes you think.![]()

Wanted: VN ~ VE Wrecked or Running V8
Buy the VN SS as they are right price now. Wished I'd had one from new....
Before I turn the key in the 5.0L VN I close eyes and think what could it be today - SS or HSV....
(reality is to look at - stock as safire silver and calais rims n grill)
All the good bits are inside.

Actually, I'd back a 5L with the TH700 to take almost anything in first gear, 3.06:1 it's one hell of a low ratio. Second is a bit of a dissapointment until you get some mods onto it though.I agree that the manuals are better overall, but they're not worth the extra money that people want for em these days. Oh, and I'm probably a bit biased, but I dunno if I'd be going for an SS, when you look at how much they're going for over base models with the same engine and drivetrain it's fairly rediculous. V8 execs/berlinas can be picked up in reasonable nick for 3 grand if you shop around. SS's in similar condition often go for twice that! If you really want that badge at the back then fair enough, but the same car with different trim can be had for far less.

If you're looking at supercharging in the long run, you'd wanna be doing a decent check of the engine health of the vehicle. Being a VN, it's probably got 200K+ on it and knowing how durable the bloody things are, it most likely wouldn't have even had the heads lifted in that time. So, a compression check would be a must, make sure it's got good oil pressure then maybe buy it. Those checks only really tell ya that the bottom end is probably in decent nick, so putting a charger on it would most likely entail stripping it down halfway, getting the heads reco'd etc. Hard work. Fun results though.
If you are gonna do this make sure you're thinking with the smart brain, not the petrolhead brain. I rushed into buying my VN V8 and got fairly lucky, it lasted 9 months with a P-plater behind the wheel before it blew a gasket. If it had done that a few months earlier I'd have been in a world of hurt. So just take it smooth and easy and work out what's gonna be best in the long run yeah?
Cheers,
Neil

Meh, different people have different perspectives I suppose. To me it's pretty damned quick off the mark. I find autos easier to launch though, someone who has a knack for launching manuals would proably have a different view of things. Manuals are a far more satisfying drive if you're driving hard though, can be smoother as well if you shift carefully on the way up and double shuffle on the way down. Get's kinda tiring though, specially if ya do it for a living.![]()

my v6 wont be soo slowespecially when the engine comes out and she gets some love on her bottom end and more boost
the 8s are good to work, can get some power N/A out of them
The VN-SS is a mean car. In my opinion the best SS model to date.
My mate has one, lovely car. Goes hard. Another mate has the running gear out of one in his VB project car, now that thing is pushing 300rwkw with the auto transmission, autos slow? me thinks not.
Also, I beg to differ with Keesh. My CAI setup on my otherwise stock VP V6 made huge performance and fuel economy gains. Coupled with a K&N panel filter of course. Definitely worth the $65 or whatever holden charge for them these days.
Get the SS mate. I love those cars.
