Hey There, Thought i start a new thread for this one...
im just about to do an oil change in my 5spd.
the reason for this being its starting to make some strange noises and 1-2 and 2-3 are a little sticky.... i have a kind of Grinding noise as im driving Worse in 1st n 2nd than anywhere else.
The car was owned by a p-plater when i brought it and he was honest about the floggin its had.. (i only brought it cos its got a nice kit/paint job and pedders red)
The question here is what kind of figures am i lookin at for a Rebuild on the 5spd?? any Gearbox specialists out there?? i dont want to take it somewhere and get ripped off for somthing shit...... nor do i need somthing thats going to Pull Burnouts all day longnor am i going to do any extreme engine work.

this could be really really bad advice. so make sure you ask plenty of people before doing this. but i there are some manual gearbox's that run auto trans fluid in them. i know of one case where someone was having a little trouble with the gearboix and they were told to put trans fluid in and never looked back.
not sure if it is just a jap car thing or what. the car i am talking about was a late 80's/early 90's camry
I am not sure about the cost of a rebuild but Nulon make a gear oil conditioner that works a treat. It cost around $40 though. I have a 4wd that goes through hell and back and when the gearbox got noisy and crunchy I gave her an oil change and put some of the conditioner in and all noises went and shifting became a lot smoother too.
the VN commodores owners manual says you gotta use some sort of special transmission oil, later model commodores owners manuals says to use ATF. i'd try some ATF(i run it in my VN 5spd), run it for a few weeks and then change it again, this way you clean all the internals etc and then see what it does.

i can't see why it would damage it. it shouldn't matter as long as it is getting lubricated
