Hi,
I have just bought a 1991 VN Calais, I have been told that you can not get a shift kit installed in a VN. Can anyone tell me whether this is definite, or it is possible to get one installed and what is required.
Thanks,
no its not true, you can get one installed, 3/4 of the commodore owners on this site have one, also if you do a search on shift kits, there will be threads from where to get it in your area and part numbers, etc, etc
THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT
Legend, im not...you know, all that educated when it comes to cars. I just know I have a love for commodores, and I will enjoy doing my VN up.
Rather than making a new thread, is there any negative to having a LSD(limited slip diff)?
only that they have to be rebuilt when they start wearing out... which can be costly...
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
oh and they arnt always reliable to spin both wheels after a while...

Yea, shift-kits can easily be installed by a specialist. I've got a stage-2 kit on my VP, with the corvette servo, and I havn't looked back. You should be able to get one done between $300-400. Shifts between 1st-2nd are a lot crisper (kicks the arse out a little when shfiting on wet roads), and down-shifts from 4th-3rd and 3rd-2nd are a lot more responsive. (also less painful for the gearbox). All the kit basically does is increase the trans fluid pressure, while corvette servos can take a bit more of a pounding than the standard ones.
Worth the investment![]()

Sweet as, thanks guys. Will ring around during the week. Stage 2 sounds like the go then aye?
Sorry to post again, i was looking at www.shiftkits.com. My model car, 91 VN Calais, AUTO. Did not come up in the list of holdens they can supply shift kits for. My guess is, you guys are installing the VR shift kit? Or can you actually get the a VN specified **** kit : /
thats because these shift kits you looked at are for the electronically controlled transmissions found in VR-onwards. they work in a similar way of telling the pcm to increase line pressure of the trans so the shifts are firmer.
the shift kits people have been talking about so far in this thread are "real" shift kits (as i like to call them) which are installed into the trans itself.
oh real, ne1 know a perth automotive shop that will fit these for me? and..to make things easier stock or order one in and then fit it..
All transmission places will do it... Most have their own version of a shiftkit but the best brand to go is for a Transgo shiftkit.
Transgo, noted. Thanks
Was there a 4th corvette servo kit mate?..
When looking on ebay at the transgo shift kits i noticed the electronic 4 speed has billet servo kits 2nd and 4th.. But with the Corvette servo i have only noticed 2nd servo kits.
So i was wondering would you buy 2 or something? Do you know?

Yeah, no real need for a servo on 4th, as you're rarely ever going to be putting a high enough load on the piston shifting from third.

I might tow but i was thinking in 4th it might hold better going up hills, And i might get cruise soon so i was hoping then it would pull 4th better and hold, Some cars i have drove they always drop gears easy on little rises on highways.
