    Default knocking on cold start

My 3.8l vp calais makes a knocking sound on cold start, which then goes away after maybe 5 minutes of driving. The engine also feels like it is missing slightly on idle at any temp. The engine was a reco and has only done about 20'000k since then. I did have a short period where I ran out of petrol a couple of times, once running out 3 times on the way back to melbourne nad having to use 100 octane racing fuel

I am sure this hasn't helped (I'm hoping I didn't do too much damage) but I really want to fix the knocking problem so I was planing on inspecting the pushrods this weekend to see if the oil supply orifice in the pushrod is blocked as the knocking sound definitely seems to come from inside the driver side rocker cover. My thinking is that the orifice is probably partially blocked and oil doesn't get up there until it is heated up. Is this a likely situation or is there anything else I should check?

Also my harmonic balancer has one long crack around the innermost part of the rubber, i'm guessing that can't be too good, should I replace it?

    Thanks.

Yeah, sounds like a dodgy part on the reco.

100 octane won't hurt your car. I run mine on Shell V-Power, that's 100 octane.

Yeh I run it on 98 octane the stuff I used from my mate was for his moty I dunno what else is in it. After a bit of examination I think the knocking is coming from the bottom end Will give it an oil flush this weekend see if it quietens down a bit otherwise 5.0L conversion here I come.

But still if someone rebuilt it for you they really got to fix it, I wouldn't let them get you if something is dodgy.

Like Last week i got some 10mm TopGun Leads, Special order sent in never in stock, $120. Get home on the weekend i was going too fit them with some new plugs. Got them out and noticed by the 3rd lead they gave me the wrong size in one, 2 long and 4 short. I called them couldn't get them till today.
Went and seen them and they questioned me like some ****en fool about was it the right car what series is it year bla bla etc.. I was a bit offended so i let the vain pop in my neck, Told them would matter if it was VN S2 or ****en VY S2 they are too ****en short!.. So they had to get a stock 8.8mm set to see, God **** me dead you couldn't miss the 4 small ones with 2 long ones, They won't fit. So they take them back, I get a call about 3 hours later for the guy to tell me if they replace the lead that is wrong it's going to cost me more money... The vain popped into SA this time.. How ****en dare you try and charge me for your Incompetents!, You made the mistake you pay for it, These are special ordered leads not your average grab them off some ****en shelf at k-mart!.. I got what i should have in the end and that was 6 new plugs for nothing, They make mistakes they pay for it never let someone roll you when you are being fair and they try and give you one in the bat cave it's wrong, They do it once they do it many times.

Yeh sorry if I wasn't clear, when I bought the car the engine had recently been reco'd. I had no problem with it up until recently, most likely due to neglect on my part.
