Hiya guys n gals. Basically my 1991 VN WAGON has stopped and wont start. We believed that the fuel pump needed replacing(external), so i have done so. After readin alot on here i have a few questions :
1. Is there 1 or 2 fuel pumps in this model
2. Do i need the computer re programmed ??? after this instal and if so does holden do this.
Basically the vehicle tries to start but just doesnt kick over. Have read similar issues like intermitant faults but not the case, she just wont kick over at all.
I believe fuel is passing through the fuel filter.
Obviously i have little knowledge of vehicles except minor things and that i do know how to drive them very hard.it hasnt really been maintained regularly.
Not sure what else i can tell you about the problem.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers![]()
Id say its a fuel problem, does it smell funni when u try to turn it ova?
But could also be a spark problem like coil packs, but my bet its fuel related
Have u changed the fuel filter lately?
U wont need to reset the ecu if new pump is put in.
I dont know bout wagons but sedan only have a internal pump unless its a 8 then they have a 2nd external pump but im not 100% sure hey

Do you hear the pump prime itself when you turn the igition to ON? Should hear a wuring sound for a few seconds. no sound no pump. Try swaping the pump relay with the horn relay - does the horn still work after you do that.
Other things to stop it from firing are the CAS and the DFI/Coils.

Disconnect the fuel inlet line put a bottle over it and cycle the ignition from off to accessories, fuel should come out into the bottle ?? no fuel means pump relay fuse or wiring problem.
Sweet guys will check tonight. Appreciated.
Okay dudes, i changed the fuel filter and have disconnected the front side of the filter so as the fuel can spill into container through the filter and the following happens :
Fuel pumps through fast for just over a second then cuts off.
i connected all back up and she tries to tick over but if i touch the pedal she basically wont turn over.
If i turn the key without pumping the pedal she tries harder to tick over but just doesnt start. Sometimes it almost does.
I looked around and noticed where the fuse box under the bonnet and there is about 5 large square fuses exposed. left to right is 30amp, 40amp, broken fuse, 30amp, nothing or blank.
Can anyone advise
1 why the pump stops after about a second, is that normal.
2 what the particular fuses are for
3 whats the 3rd broken one for and what amp do i need to get
4 whatelse could be wrong.
Just trying to eliminate 1 thing at a time.
Appreciate any help.
tks
In the fuse and relay box under the bonnet there is a fuse for your fuel pump, if any of you fuses are broken replace them and see if you get some fuel action, if that doesn't work try give your fuel tank a good hard smack!!! sometime will kick the fuel pump into gear, also another thing to check is the wiring on the fuel pump and make sure everything is connected properly, see how you go
So are you confirming that the new pump should not stop at all. Is that correct. I didnt know if for some technical reason it is designed to stop.
