Piggy Back Computer????

Hi ther just scored a car off someone vn had series 1 engine and it has what seems to be another computer under the dash?????
The previous owner says that it is a piggy back computer???? but knew nothing more about it.
It is a black box that plugs into the original compter and is about the same size but it is mounted between the steering colum and the dash.
The only things that are written on it is where the plugs go in and one says engine 1 and the other says commputer.
Probably a stupid question to ask...... but what is it and why do other cars dont have it.???

its just an aftermarket ecu that someone has installed into the car, it would control ignition, spark, fuel and other operations for the engine. has there been any modifications to the car? like something that would need a tune such as a cam and/or ported heads? because thats why most people would add a piggy back ecu to there car, to tune it after mods.

Person could not tell me about any engine mods etc. they dont know.

also keen on pics most of these piggyback things are a have they just fool your ecu with recalibrated sensor info like coolant temp and air temp to just keep the car slightly on the choke and stuff just to get more fuel in

you sure its not the power windows module? thats a back plastic box thing that sits under the dash, to the left of the steering columb. that said i wouldnt expect that to have stuff written on it as you described...
