IRS diff center and NON-IRS centers

hey guys iv'e got a VQ caprice and it seems like the diff (lsd) has had it.. iv'e get a whine from about 10kmph and it gets louder as u go faster.. iv'e also noticed the left cv boot from the diff has split.. im pretty sure it's the diff thats making the noise but what im not sure is if i cant replace the center with non irs 3.9... also are the bearings hard to replace as i can get them.. i might be selling the car soon so just a quick fix for now... any help would be great

could be ur wheel bearings also, what type of whine is it, grumble or whomp whomp..

Despite what it says in the diff thread on the other famous forums, the irs centre is not the same as the non irs centre. The main gear on the irs one is in a different spot, I was told you can make it fit with a 8mm spacer but thats getting pretty shonky and probably wouldn't hold up under hard driving

thanks for the response, as for what sound it is i would have to say that typical whine u get when the diffs stuffed. i dunno bit hard to say but the wheel bearings are fine.. i used a diff additive when the noise wasn't that bad which fixed it for a day.. when i reverse i get a cluncking noise.
hmm as for the irs and non irs center i was asking cos i can get a set of 4.11 out of a pintara but they are live axel.

any decent diff shops in brisbane and surrounding areas? or should i just stick a whole diff assy from the wreakers?

good luck finding a live axel lsd in brissy - i been looking around at wreckers for ages for one, they've all got irs ones!

i think all the gears are the same. just the centre. that is right isn't it??

Yep that's right defa, just the size of the centre is different, well it's the same but the location of where the gear bolts onto is different but the gears still bolt on (they just don't line up if the centre is non irs)

so use the diff gears and you could use the spider gears/cones and springs from the IRS center to fix your live axle center etc.

Nah only the main gears are the same
