The steering wheel in my VN is just about buggered and needs to be replaced so it will pass roadworthy. A mate told me i will need a steering wheel puller to get it off. Is this correct?
Cheers

you can do it without 1. just take the horn pad off and loosen the bolt off a few turns, but leave it on. hold the wheel on ether side and lever it back and forth and it should pop off. then undo the bolt and hey presto.
if it doesnt pop of like said above just put a socket over the nut and give it a gental tap while pulling it towards you. might need someone else to help
righto cheers, i will try that![]()

dont forget to leave the nut on to start - so ya dont bash ya head in when the wheel eventually comes off - dont laugh have seen it happen - (no not to me) ha ha
Better off getting a puller I have allways just put my knees behind the wheel and hitting the nut with a hammer but did this to my vp the other day wondered why my new $100 wheel-boss wouldnt fit had pretty much effed the collum and you dont want to know how much threads left to hold the nut on with.damage is emminent buy a puller or borrow one wish I had.
get a steering wheel puller !!!!!!!!!!!!! cheap and easy. I did the hammer treatment and $250 i had a new column and rack.....just get a puller dont attempt with hammers its just not worth it
Cheers
Dont really wanna do any damage, so i might go and invest in a puller today

yeah go the puller, totally worth it.
also, make sure you put the new wheel on 100% straight like the old one,
i figured since my fronts were straight ahead that the wheel should be too, but it was just a bit out, probably pays to check before you put the bolt back on the steering wheel.
How to remove a steering wheel 101.
Step 1: Remove horn pad and retaining nut.
Step 2: Sitting in the seat, make fists with your hands.
Step 3: Hit the wheel at 9 and 3 of a clock face hard and fast.
Step 4: Slip wheel off and fit new wheel.
There are many ways of removing a steering wheel, but the only one that ALWAYS works, especially straight away is a steering wheel puller.
That is not entirely true. If someone has tried before and buggered the threads in the steering wheel, the puller won't work. I used to do wheel alignments and I have never used a puller on a steering wheel. The only reason I took the wheel off was to put it back in the correct position after someone else did it incorrectly.
Yeah, hammers are a no no. Good old trusty fists. Cheap, easy to get hold of and works even better when you picture your ex on the wheel.
