    Default replacing steering wheel?

The steering wheel in my VN is just about buggered and needs to be replaced so it will pass roadworthy. A mate told me i will need a steering wheel puller to get it off. Is this correct?

you can do it without 1. just take the horn pad off and loosen the bolt off a few turns, but leave it on. hold the wheel on ether side and lever it back and forth and it should pop off. then undo the bolt and hey presto.

Better be a gentle tap or you will push the steering rack down. Extremely easy to do.

I would spend the $10 on a steering wheel puller. They are great! And will last forever

yeah go the puller, totally worth it.
also, make sure you put the new wheel on 100% straight like the old one,
i figured since my fronts were straight ahead that the wheel should be too, but it was just a bit out, probably pays to check before you put the bolt back on the steering wheel.

How to remove a steering wheel 101.

Step 1: Remove horn pad and retaining nut.
Step 2: Sitting in the seat, make fists with your hands.
Step 3: Hit the wheel at 9 and 3 of a clock face hard and fast.
Step 4: Slip wheel off and fit new wheel.

There are many ways of removing a steering wheel, but the only one that ALWAYS works, especially straight away is a steering wheel puller.

That is not entirely true. If someone has tried before and buggered the threads in the steering wheel, the puller won't work. I used to do wheel alignments and I have never used a puller on a steering wheel. The only reason I took the wheel off was to put it back in the correct position after someone else did it incorrectly.

because I used a trusty hammer to get mine of I had to buy a new rack and column....they cost alot more then a puller...i will not ever use a hammer to get a wheel off again as for the vs wheel it just pulls off after arguing with it for about 5 mins
    Cheers

Yeah, hammers are a no no. Good old trusty fists. Cheap, easy to get hold of and works even better when you picture your ex on the wheel.
