i have a earthing problem. i first fixed it by adding another earth strap to the body. that worked good for a few days then the headlights started flickering bad. yesterday i baught another earth strap and ran it from negitave terminal on the battery to the engine block. the car ran great for one night, no flickering, lights were nice and bright. tonight i took it for a drive to pick up my bro from work and the headlights are flickkerin so bad its not funny,
so now i have 3wires like 4guage size to the body, its clean i stripped the paint and sandpapered it and attached it nice and firm., then the 3rd one goes to the engine block and is same as above. a nice clean connection and securily on., what would cause it to stop flickering for one night then the next be the flickering.
if it just your headlights that are playing up mate i would be inclined to check all the wiring for your lights starting from the lights and work back. not the fuse or dodgy relay?
How good are the connections to the battery? Would be the first place I would look at.
connections are good, and also i got new terminals cause i thought the old ones caused the problesm. and its not just the headlights, it dash lights, interior
anything, could it be a faulty alternator or battery?
Bump, any other solutions?
maybe ur alternator is rooted.
how much will a new one set me back and how hard is it to install, can it be done in a day, cause like Sunday is my only day off work. also how do i test if it is faulty, i have a multimeter and i have *some* electrical knowledge.(thanks to yr 10 electrical class)
lights flickering, battery not holding charge, stuff like that. their like 250 bucks new (i think) and not too hard too change.
my battery has pleantly of charge, its just the lights flickering i need to stop. and its not the wiring. its only when the engine is running.
yeh, that could be the alternator. it could be a dodgy wire connection somewhere, try another alternator on it and see? or take to auto elecy.
Sounds alot like a problem i had a few years back, Whil i posted on here & thnx guys for the tips none worked.....But i took to auto elecy & it turned out it was the volt regulator.
I hope this helps...Its the little black thing on the back of the alternator![]()
Im a true commy boy!!!
does it happen over bumps or anything cause it could be your fuse box my relays do it cause the loose and the lights will flicker and then sometimes turn off.
nope only when the engine is running, even if i go over speed bumps and stuff its all the same. i wonder if if could just be the alternator. i might go down to the wreckers and grab one.. and if that makes it run good ill just buy a new one., what is the max price i should pay for a 2nd hand used and abused alternator?
might be a blown head gasket or altinator and u might find one at wreckers for bout up to 100 bux or little bit more for second hand one thaqts a good price for one i wouldnt pay anymore then 200 bux for second hand may aswel spend that money on new one u duno how long ya got til it blows again with second hand one
reconditioned ones are 60$ on ebay and new ones are like 120$ max.
Blown head gasket effecting lights?????? ok then.
Should be able to pick up a alt from wreckers for around 60-70.
Just shake the pulley around to see how much play the bearings have.
Could be something as simple as the light switch.
mate before you go spending money on your alternator do this check.. get your multi meter and put it on your battery. it should read 12-13volts. start your car and your meter should read 13.7-14.2 approx. this means that it is charging ok. if it reads any more then it could boil your battery. if no change from the original reading of 12-13 volts then it is not chrgng. if anything the light on your dash should stay on or fade in or out if faulty. are you in the r.a.c. ? if so give them a call and get them to come out and do a check for you, or a least ask them.
Whenever something goes wrong in my car i do the LGTC method of repair.
Look under the bonnet
Guess what could be wrong
Think about if you can be ****ed fixing it
Call the mechanic/auto lecky to book in a repair
Unless its something easy, like headlight bulbs or fuses or battery then i usually CBF getting dirty...
Dont like my driving? Get off the sidewalk!

I don't think anybody has mentioned a dicky fuse, that could be causing the problem. Id check that aswell, you never know your luck
