got a new heater tap, cos the old one was leaking coolant, and also didn't work. problem is this one still lets hot water through.
i've checked the heater controls in the cabin, the dial moves the metal rod, which moves a little arm near the driver footwell but i think the stage between this and the heater tap is shot.
(this would be the stage where the controls actually make the suction to move the valve)
how hard is it to get to this next component, and anyone have any info on what needs to be done?
Disconect the rod from the white plastic clip and see if you can close the heater off manualy. Stop the hot air.
To get to the tubes (if one has come off) is radio out and the underside of the dash. Take about 30 mins to do.

the dash part round the radio/centre console?
cool, i've taken the stereo surround off, but not further than that, any hints on the next stage of part to pull off/screw locations?
it could be that the little rod held by the white clip is out of adjustment. when on full could make sure it pushes the little black button in. i had the same problem, always got hot air, even with the dial on cold. turns out that the guy installing the alarm had knocked it but put it back, he had mentioned it but it took me a while to remember. once adjusted correctly i've had no more problems

i know the black button you mean, so pushing that in should stop the flow of hot coolant? i thought there was something further up the line that could be at fault, i'll check that tonight.
does this meant that when the heater knob is at the centre (not hot/not cold) i should be getting some hot water through still?

is there actually vacuum at the heater tap?... if there is maybe u installed the tap backwards?
the commys have a constant flow of air delivered into the cabin even with the switches off. and if the heater tap is in the on position the the air will be hot as the coolent will be allowed to flow into the heater core.
when the tap is in the off position coolent cant flow so the core wont heat up.
if there isnt hold the tap closed to see if the heat stops.
if it stops then chech the vacuum just above the little arm that is moved by the metal rod. this little arm controls the vacuum supply to the heater tap, there will be a supply in and a supply out. the supply in comes from the main supply at the main heater switch, the supply out goes to the heater tap. if u have vacuum in but not out them disconnect the metal rod from the white plastic clip and manualy move the arm to see if this recifies the problem.
if it doesnt then there is a screw to remove the little switch and just check it to see if it looks broken... sometimes the little arm breaks so it looks like its working but in fact the valve is still in the same position.
if u dont have vacuum at either ends of the valve then u will have to pull out the surround, then the heater controls and i think off memory its hose No7 which is the main supply from the engine. and u will have to trace back all the hoses till u find the crook one.
but try the simple things first and u might get lucky that all u have done is pinched or knocked a vacuum hose of somewhere.

thanks for the indepth help, guys. i'll go over all those points today.
the damned things started leaking coolant again, don't know at what point but it's somewhere on the driver side of the engine bay. the heater pipe joins at the engine, radiator and cabin seem dry, so the taps' the logical point.
last time i cut the ends off the piping to shorten it and see if i could get a better seal, even bought a new heater tap and new hose clamps.
weird thing is it's a v8 heater tap in a v6, anyone else seen anything like it? (the v6 tap has like 4 pipes off it, the v8 is a straight through)
can anyone tell me if i can use sealant where the hose joins to the tap, under the hose clamps?
the tap with 4 pipes as u say is for a s1 with header tank. the straight through type is a s2 one with overflow.
ah, all good. i was just going on what the bag i got from autobarn said on it.
