how do i diagnose engine probs? and what are "codes"?

my v6 engine is running a bit rough and has sometimes cutout on me a few times.
i want to diagnose what needs to be done to get it running right.
any help will be most welcome

is your engine light on at all?....sounds like it could be fuel filter/fuel pump

yes the engine light comes on every now and then. i just had a mate who is a mechanic have a look at it with his diagnostic computer type thing and he found a burned wire that connects to the oxygen sensor..the wire isnt burned thru but is very dark in colour so he said to cut the bad section out and solder the wires back together. i dunno if this will help the running of it or not though..
