    Default Memcal - Tuning?

Hey guys, I have seen quite a few references to writing your own memcal programs.

Could someone please explain what/where the memcal is? (I'm assuming is a ROM storage chip for engine timing etc used by the ECU)

Read the tutorial for replacing the standard hard to flash ROM chip with a eprom socket by greenfoam but I have no idea where the memcal is, where to get a socket + a coupla eproms + burner and how to go about writing my own.

Is the memcal what you modify to change your cars "tune"?

    Thanks for the help people

What you need to do is write a new eprom which is inside the memcal. The memcal is inside the ECU with is bolted to the car under the front passenger kick panel cover thing (beside the passengers left foot).

Then you buy a couple eproms and willem eprom programer (from ebay) you can go to the freestlye section on street commooOOoOOoodores and see all about it or search around on this forum but everything you need to know has allready been posted

Ok, umm, I figured out the programmer bit at least

What sort of ROM chips will the ECU take? Will it accept larger sizes eg a 27c512? And what sort of socket do I need to solder on?

You need a 28 pin socket and you can use any size 27c 28 pin eprom so long as it's bigger than 128 (you need at least 256 for the VR manual tune)

any of the willem programmers will do it and you need a uv eraser as well so you dont have to take the chip out and then buy this from moates.net HDR1 Memcal Header [HDR1] - $10.00 : Moates.Net done software you want tunerpro free off the net

A good tune will definitely help.
