hey fella's and chicks.
when i leave my car overnight and go to start it in the morning, it starts, but it coughs and splutters and does all kinds of crazy things for about 20 seconds when it stops being stupid and just drives normally. any ideas?
it just started happening the other day out of the blue.
So it's only on cold start up?

Tomorrow doesn't look good either.

That is the symptoms for a leaking fuel injector
oh dear. in that case do i change the name of this thread?
umm.. is it possible to check these things yourself?
and yes, its only on cold startup. but! (yes theres a but), i leave my car in the sun for about 8 hours at work and it starts and runs fine from startup, its only in the mornings.
In the morning, when it does finally start, does it blow a whole heap of smoke and stink of fuel?

I'd be saying a leaking injector. Try having the 'O' rings in the injectors replaced first, and if that doesn't work then the whole injector/s may need to be replaced.

righto, thanks for the advice. i'll contact the old man and see what he says and let him know what ya's think.
how cold is it getting in your area? does sound like injectors, leaking back...but it could also mean many other things...try some injector cleaner first, as this is your cheapest option at the moment,if it turns out to be your injectors you can buy reconditioned sets for VN's for around $85 from memory...things like that though only come with a 3 month warranty
yeah thanks mate, i just rang ol' wise father and he said to try injector cleaner first. but before i do anythign im letting my car sit until its cold then checking for any visible (and smellable) petrol leaks around the injectors.
its not that cold in geelong yet. and my car proved me wrong and did the same after work, where it was sitting in 30 degree heat all day, so its not just when its cold weather.
how long has it been doing it....seems as though everyones been having fuel problems in the last month, now my bet is,that it's the fuel itself,i don't know about where you are,but here in hobart they change the octane rating, one for summer and one for winter, and i have a sneaking suspicion that they have changed over early this year......thats another possibility, but i don't know if they do this in your area like i said.
yeah not sure mate. last fill up was at mobil.. dodgy mobil! i usually fill up at APCO!! haha
Another thing to check is the fuel pressure regulator. If that is faulty then it will bleed back and not hold constant pressure until all the lines pressurise and it evens out. Similar to a garden retic system if one of the solenoid valves leak, the sprinklers cough and splutter until all the pipes have constant pressure.
nah the problem didnt start till i filled up the car at Mobil. could be a bad batch of petrol? or something blocking?
and not_an_abba_fan, how do you check the fuel pressure regulator?
it may well be the iac valve
howdy again, problem solved!! musta been blocked.. chucked in some injector cleaner and it starts and runs perfectly as of this afternoon.
iac being idle air control valve
Mobil is dodge...
Ive always had nothing but problems with Mobil, even the synergy premium stuff.
I wouldnt recommend it for my worst enemy's lawnmower.
My VN loves Shell, either ULP or 98 premium.
