Default I think I know what THAT bad rattle is

I'm sure I'm not the only VN/P owner what has a very loud clunking rattle that seems to come from inside the doors or infront of the doors (mostly the drivers side). Well as I was driving home tonight, clunk clunk over the bumps on the highway and I had a revelation and realised that these clunks are related not really to bumps well they are but it's more that that, these clunks can also be made by cruising slow and accelerating slightly, just enough to give the body a bit of torsional twist but not enough so that the engine makes too much noise so you can still here the clunk.

Well each time you give a little power you get a clunk, everytime you go over a bent bit of road you get a clunk it's caused by flex in the car and when the car flexes the worn out pins in the doors must bash the inside of the hinge and go "Clunk, clunk" so one of my next jobs on the vp is to replace the door pins to see if this cures the "big" rattle in the car

Bonnet hinges rattle too and sound like it comes from the door. My rattle turned out to be the bonnet catch was loose lettling the bonnet rattle and transmit back to the door. I pulled the whole door apart but could not stop the rattle. Door pins - can you move the door up n down when open?

Yeah man the door pins are worn a bit on the drivers door for sure. But they weren't so bad on my old VN and it made the same noise but from both sides. It's just a really anoying noise because ALL the roads I drive on are very rough and it's constantly clunking away. If I get on a Melbourne style smooth road then you will never hear it at all but out here in the sticks I really can't have this kinda loosness :P so I have to fix it

I may add here that the VN wagon is (fingers crossed) rattle free for now

It has taken over 12 months to get rid of the rattles and proud as on that point.

CRC the pins and grease the door strap - will stop the bad noise.

You should be able to get the pins and all that stuff, you can still buy pretty much every part for a VS and luckily alot of these kind of parts are the same on the VS. I'll let you know how I go with this rattle fixing adventure in the next week/s

I hate rattles and clunks ant that kinda stuff, i have a vr, and i think i might know of the one you are talking about, sounds on mine like it comes from under my feet, but its not all the time, only sometimes, and usualy on a moderate bump, and i think i sometimes get it on the accel that you talk about too, i was starting to think i mighta left something loose after refitting my k frame, but i have checked everything that i had off, and its all still tight, but i have one for the ute owners out there, ever had a rattle that sounded like it was coming from behind the trim panel right next to your right ear that goes around the quarter glass? Well, i pulled it all off, drove it for a week like that, still there, so i thought it might be the outer trim, but nothing that could rattle there either, if i gave the guard a light tap, id hear it, i still couldnt find it tho, then i lifetd the tonneau up, and found it right away, the panel on the inside over the fuel filler area, i took that off, and now rattle free for 3 months and counting, ill get around to deadning it soon and putting it back on and see if its still gone, but ill be watching to see how the new door pins go, i know mine are worn, so that might be it

The pin on my VN is quite worn... or rather, the mount that holds the pin. Its able to move nearly 1cm - opening the door gives quite a nice groan and driving it does rattle too. One of these days I'll have to see if I can get a larger pin to stop this movement in the mount - the pin itself isn't worn that bad. Or perhaps a small spot of weld to make the mount smaller again

Good tip on the bonnet, I think thats also the cause of some rattles.

Followed by something along the lines of the strut or suspension

OMG write a how-to!!! Get it stickied in this section, every VN/P owner needs it!

I just fixed a maxi-rattle in my VN yesterday, removed the spare screws I had lying around in the centre console 'just in case'... ALL 35 OF THEM!! WTF! I'm sure I never put them all there....

My interior is slowly getting better, doing a conversion of EVERYTHING to VP blue-grey, so dash swap no.2 is coming up, amongst other work... spent 2 hours on the front window mechanisms alone the other day, they are better now... Unfortunately driving on highways is a lot louder without the roof lining in the car

My poor VN, it's getting closer to having all its clothes back on!!
