I'm looking at buying an oldish commodore for spare/fun in a newly aquired paddock. Alot of VNs are around for very reasonable prices around $1000. My question is... what problems (other then those listed previously in the sticky) are there to look for in VN that might get hammered a little (as mentioned all off road)
Biggest question for me is gearbox. Just about all advertised VNs have the 4 speed auto. Is this a bit weak and likeley to go and break on me?

Go for something older for paddock bashing. Want fun in a paddock? Get a Datsun. Those thing are indestructable.
A VN will cop any form of damage worse than an older car.

i agree about a datsun i had one got it for $10 bucks we did everything to it it ran on a oilly rag lol
vn engine parts pm me
Do you deliver to Perth??? :P
One of my concerns is road legal (has to transit on roads for a fair bit) so finding datsuns still licenced is hard. I'll keep an eye on Datsuns but I still like the idea of something with more go like a 6 cyl.

I have a picture somewhere of my neighbours taking their VN for a rally with his brother hanging onto the back via a rope and sliding along on a bit of wood with socks on and there's a big rooster tail of dirt comming up off his sock/foot. It's gold![]()
go a old kingswood or something like that, i reckon that would be heaps of fun!
We got rep back, yaaay!
one word....corona..unkillable, manual..cheap as and plus u look like a granny when driving it
Cheers
valiant, my cousin has one. it was perfect , one owner its whole life and the lady use it 1once a week to shopping and come straight home, then she passed away and it got given to my uncle. 56k original miles. then my cousins left it in the bush for ages and now there ****loads of rust, so much for a perfect car.
how about a bj40 landcruiser wit a 351 in her.. now thats a beast.. lol
LIFES A GARDEN, DIG IT..lol
Best paddock basher I've ever seen was a Datsun Stanza. It had dual wheels at the rear. It was a monster!!! Heeeeaps of fun too.

one of the best paddock bashers ive driven is an old subaru sportswagon (4wd) fair bit of ground clearance and refuses to die.
sounds mighty good with a pipe coming straight off the manifold exiting out the side.
cheers
yer or a subaru brumby still c them floating around.. i seen one of them sports wagons wit 31" tyres n a lift kits on it at gembrook doing some 4wd n it went alrite just as good as me bros hilux wit his 33" micky thompsons.. well it wasnt quite as good but yer

Actually we did have one of those old brown subaru 4wd wagons a few years ago and it was quite good fun (if a bit slow due to its age)
Unfortunately I hit a tree with it and it moved the entire front wheels/axel/steering etc to the right about a foot or two.
The other thing that made me like a commodore is i used to have a vk (unfortunately wasn't actually mine i was just looking after) which got sold. Rear wheel drive on gravel/paddock is the bomb and i was hoping for that sorta thing again.
There seems to be a bit of a shortage of datsuns for sale none of the websites i look on list many at all even quokka and stuff. I thought these things were more common

a mint valy is worth more than you life right now! what a waste.... which model was it???
hahah, VNs are hard enough to run on the road gently let alone off the road! ###, get something like kingswood or some kind of ford (except an escort - PLEASE dont get an escort... these things have to be kept alive, there dying slowly and restorers need them so please dont ruin them!) somehting crappy... VN will break on ya to easy...
aZK.
Where u located? My friend has a Datsun Stanza 4sp which could go with a little work.
I FRYED RICE!!!
I had a Datsun Stanza as my first car. Its was pretty cool. They run the same engine as the Datto 1600, which would be even better if you found one of those. They are a great engine too. We used to call the Stanza the "George Car". Think about it........
hack #1: XD falcon, manual, 200 motor, no rear doors, bonnet or boot. dumped, welded diff, exhast runs through cabin
hack #2; XF falcon, manual, 250 motor, inc carpets/doors/aircon that still works. welded diff.
great fun with both of the running togetherif you get a falcon, look for one with power steer, the tighter locks make it a lot easier to correct hehe
Go a Cortina with the 250 Crossflow in it
go the suburu 4wd wagons..... my old man & little brother couldnt give their old one away..... so they decided to make it into a dune buggy, took off all panels & cut what didnt come off, cut in down the middle & shortened it, welded a rollcage to it, & hours of fun in the sand dunes.....
during.....
after......
