I'm looking at getting a new diff. What exactly do the different ratios mean and how does changing them affect things?
Also what ratio do you recommend and what would be a reasonable price to expect to pay?
And further more is it really worth getting an LSD?
If u wanna go sideways get an lsd, if u wanna get better acceleration get 3.7:1 gears, it will rev a lil higher on the highway though.
kilowatts are like drugs, the more you get, the more you want.
if you want to go sideways, you get a spool, illegal and dangerous in some cconditions and the wrong hands, if you want good traction, you get an LSD, these will wear out though. a general rule of thumb with ratios is, the higher the number, the faster the acceleration, and the lower your top speed
i would go spool not lsd the reasons are above and once you learn how to use one, you'll love it!
We got rep back, yaaay!
well kept limo all the way!!! 3.7s,good comprimise. expect to pay around $500 for brand new gears give or take(not fitted)
I went 3.9's and LSD... And im completely happy with the LSD and I love the 3.9's !
How much difference in your top speed would you notice with 3.9's? Also how much would your fuel economy suffer? Generally speaking?
It uses more fuel but its worth it and its not that bad...
Top speed is up in the 190's somewhere, perhaps a tad bit more?
Ok cool, I will be looking at getting a 3.9 then
Do you have to replace the entire diff or can you just change part of one to get the higher ratio? (If you want an open diff I mean, I figure you have to replace the entire thing if you want an LSD)
And what would be an expected price for an open 3.9 vs LSD 3.9?
Cheers
You only replace the gears for the ratio, brand new like 500ish or second hand out auto skylines I think (but i'd go with brand new).
Umm LSD depends, 1500 mark for a good brand new LSD centre, or get a second hand LSD diff like I did (cost me $100 out of a VN 5L Calais, then had it rebuilt, acid washed, painted, shimmed and tightened etc.)
Ok, would something like this work?

It would... but I would rather spend extra and buy new personally. Sometimes you get diff whine with old gears, and you need to have them installed anyway...
it couldnt be that hard to put em in?
Well if you are getting an LSD diff done as well, you might as well have them installed while they're at it, save you the trouble and the mess.
