Hey i have a friend and she has a vn commodore, she has been letting #$%heads drive her car and holding the gears for 10 seconds, and not changing into 2nd and valve bouncing it, now when you put your foot down half way it sounds like its done a engine mount or something, when you take off at the lights it is sluggish and groans at you. Tell me what u think. thanx
Does anyone have an idea.
Sounds more like the transmission has sh!t itself.
does it backfire? valve bouncing ...not good,by second gear,do you mean in auto or manual? if auto most likely that, but that won't cause sluggishness, sure it will cause a funny feeling to the driver, but it would only be lag on the gearbox (taking longer to select next gear)
if manual, it will take more than valve bouncing to clag that up
if its your gear box....start cryiing buddy *im still wipping my tears away all $700-800 of em*

It is an auto gearbox. When u take off at lights it Groans and there is a delay and its not responsive its got me stumped. i thought engine mount cause it feels like the front lifts up thats what mine use to do. Thanx 4 every1z input.
engine mount will "knock" when you put the foot down on accelerator,or when turning a corner, won't have the sluggish effect, the cheapest and easiest thing to check,is try kickdown adjustment, making sure throttle adjustment is correct first, check colour of tranny oil, smell it for a burnt smell, next step,if it still groans,by "groaning" how do you mean and when idling or under load, does the groan go out after about 1800-200 RPM? if so,and you know how to pull the tranny, check flex plate, for cracks, although flex plate will give you a ticking kind of sound under load forward and reverse.
actually you don't have to take gearbox out, to check for cracked flex plate, but you might as well, the things you have to undo, just to get belly plate off, once you have steering rack pulled back and down, starter out and belly plate off, undo the 3 torque convertor bolts, push convertor hard back into box, this should give you enough room to shine a light up in there and inspect flex plate.paying attention to centre and around bolt holes,if it's cracked you will see it..
I hate gearboxes.
I especially hate when you pull out CV joints without remembering that gearbox oil will spill out on you when you are lying underneath...
And i hate the smell that gearbox fluid leaves on you and in your nose that you cant get rid of.....
not that im talking from experience..... haha
Dont like my driving? Get off the sidewalk!

Spot on here for tranny problems. I thought I had a buggered tranny but the local mechanic just moved the cable about 3mm (buy pushing in the little silver button on the throttle mount) and the slipping was gone. Saved replacing the box. Made my day I can tell you.
So for a tranny that may just be taking a while to change gears - check the kick down cable first before getting a replacement tranny.

Yeah i dont think its the kick down cable cause it doesnt hold the gears. it glides in ok. i checked the powersteering fluid and its dark brown??? what u think that is.
kickdown can also do that...sure not all the time, but it can,it's worth a shot, just trying a bit of adjustment on it,as these gearboxes can take a fair bit of thrashing....any oil that is suppose to be red, that has turned brown is a sign of oil being burnt....you can smell if it's burnt by just sniffing the dipstick,or putting a bit of the oil on your finger and smelling it,(something is a miss inside that component that uses the red fluid)but also on the other hand,it could just be old...never been replaced from factory
