Default installing electric mirrors on exec

hey people just pondering about installing electric mirrors onto the wagon, my sister is about to get her p's and we will regularily be sharing the car, meaning the mirrors get constantly adjusted etc. how hard would it be to source all the parts and install it? is there a module of any sort? and any pics would be great (switch, modules etc)

as far as i know there is just the little switch on the drivers door trim? i have wiring diagrams so the wiring should be a hassle and i have the door trim off atm anyway.

    cheers

i don't think there is a module for the electric mirrors,i think it's just sourced through any power from fuse panel ....but don't hold that thought, i may well be wrong

yeh just had a quick look at the gregory's, theres no module, the switch does all the work. all i need to do is wire the switch into fuse 16 and the rest of the wiring is between the switch and the mirrors... but i still need to know the location of the switch on the d/s door trim. just wondering if ican just buy the motors for the mirrors and transfer them in to the existing ones or just buy whole new mirrors from the wreckers?

i found some calais mirrors at the wreakers today, calais green ones, had a look at em they just have a little clip connector that u cun un click and switch with different mirrors, pretty simple actually. (expect more work). Im guessing just runs through the dash up through the drivers side door into the switch also the switch is on the top part of the D/S arm rest.

have a look on e-bay..you can pick up lots of cheap parts, even new after market mirrors and cosmetics....take a look....you can also get them in a carbonated looking greyish/silver,don't know if you like them, but not bad for price

also if it interests you...everything you need for VN onwards ...enjoy....i found many a good things on here

i dont think it would be that hard to wire up, the only thing that may be a pain is running the wires (if there not there already) from the passengers side to the drivers side to the switch. all u'd need is ur elec mirrors, switch, power, fuse, relay maybe.. can be done, could save a lot of cash doin it urself and checking wreckers and ebay

cheers fellas, will probably check out the wreckers soon to see what they can do, i looked on ebay, switches are goin for about $25 and a pair of mirrors from anywhere between $50-80ish, i'd be pretty happy to do it under 100 bucks. anyway will see how i go. cheers

How hard would it be to cut out the spot for the switch on the door?

thats the easy part when i get the switch it should be fairly easy to determine what size/shape hole i have to make. then just get the old razor blade should do the trick. maybe i might finally get rid of the spiders living behind my mirrors, they keep makin damn webs everywhere

Mine has a slight marking of where it would be if it had it. I was just wondering how to cut it out. I've been thinking of installing these for quite a while now.

Heres 2 pics (one of the plug in the door, and one on the mirror itself)

These plugs are what VP have, VS are different, so i'm not sure where the changeover was (obviously get the same plugs) and personally the VS ones look more durable, and more attractive (incase you have your mirrors out often.)

The switch might aswell be easier just getting the handle from a berlina, they probably wouldn't even cost $5 from a wrecker and its jst 2 phillips head bolts holding them on.

The hardest thing to find will be the mirror covers on the insides of the doors.

    plug on the mirror

    plug from the loom

i havent noticed the marking but will look out for it thx, i might even put the switch in a different position, i'll see how it goes. probably source the parts next week and start puttin it in over the weekend... hardest part will likely be running the wires from passengers door to the switch on the drivers door. i should write up a 'how-to' after too.

I'll see if I can get a pic of the marking tomorrow, but it's only faint. Almost like it's a tiny strip of the plastic poking up going all the way round where the switch would be. If that makes sense.

But definatley do a how-to. i'll wait for that before I put them in. So I can learn from your mistakes....

cheers stealthy, very helpful. im gunna try put the contents of the electric mirrors into my original mirrors (unless the ones i get are white) cause i really dont want to paint them..

i'll keep in mind about using berlina handles (no cutting )

im redoin all the door loom rubber boots (body > door) becuase they have all perished and i have all the trims of atm anyway.

    thanks again

I just went out and took a photo of the marking I was talking about. It's not very clear, and you can really only see the bottom part of it. If you look close enough!!!

Hey, I am in the process of doing this to my wagon as well.
Sourced all the parts from the wreckers from a VN berlina but don't remember how much I paid for the lot.
The hardest part is the wiring loom. It runs from the drivers door, under the drivers dash then above the glove box and down to the passengers door. It was a pain to get out so I assume it would be a pain to get in without breaking anything.
Depends which options were in the car you get the wiring loom out of. The one I stripped included central locking and power windows, but removed the window wiring out.
Its just a simple setup. Power to switch then power from switch to mirrors, no module at all.
Good luck any way. I will be doing mine when I go on holidays in about 2 weeks

yea sounds good, keep us posted with progress and pics..

i wouldnt swap electrics "guts" from mirrors, i would get another set and swap over.. maybe get a thrid mirror (damaged) so u can see how it holds together..

Umm to get the wiring out was a bugger! If you can find a berlina or exec with power mirrors all attached would be a good start. I think it could have taken me about an hour or 2 to get the entire wiring loom out of the wreck. I took the main wiring loom for the mirrors plus the wiring loom out of the doors. The boot between the car and the door is hard to get out sometimes as well. Also to get the loom out from above the glovebox I ended up breaking the dash because it is zip tied above the glovebox in the middle. At the same time I would be usefull to get the power door locks if you don't have them 'cause they are on the same loom

    Default got the stuff

Today i went down and found a nice vs berlina which had been front-ended, the motor gone but the interior hadnt been touched so i got to work, i just removed the door looms, didnt worry about getting the whole lot cause it would have taken ages to rip the dash out.

i have to dissect the loom to get only the power mirror's stuff out of it, and run 3 wires accross the car, fairly simple just hoping the electric motors are good.

also got some map pockets and speaker pods

stealthy was right about finding the interior peice on the inside where the normal manual adjustment knob goes, i'll just use the old one till one pops up..

i'll post pics up tomorrow of all the gear, and then a how-to when i install it.

    cheers.

    Default pics

ok heres the pics of the stuff you need

    handle with switch

    electric mirrors

    door looms

i have to cut all the neccesarry stuff out the door looms, i only need the circled stuff on it, when its installed just run 3 wires accross the car to the passengers mirror and 1 wire to fuse 16, and an earth somewhere of your choosing.

i hopefully will have this installed friday or the weekend so ill make sure i keep you all informed.

    cheers
