    Default Bright red cat

turned the car on today and the cat was glowing red. does that mean its rooted? it even melted the high temp paint on my exhaust rated to 1300 degrees

This either means you have unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust and the heat of the cat is igniting it. Or the front of the cat is blocking up creating a bucket load of backpressure. Get it fixed as you will melt the cat and stuff the O2 sensor. Undo the front of the cat and shine a torch in there, you should see a beige looking honeycomb ceramic brick. If it looks all melted or hollowed out it is rooted.

Dont bother getting a new one, just bash the innards out with a bar...

    Hi-Flow cat, but FREE!

just dont get caught by EPA or that "free" will suddenly be $10,000, not to mention the cost to the environment, but lets face it... big industry does a much better job of ruining the environment than a V6 commie with no cat could ever do.

But you get every dikhead with VN bashing cats out and it will make an impact. Oh and while you at it take out the mesh in your microwave door so you can see the food better.

the thing with cat's is, they probably all lose thier effect after 10,000-20,000km.

Legally a genuine cat has to last at least 40 000kms when the engine is properly maintained. Aftermarket cats last longer. If you look after your car then there is no reason a cat won't last 80 000kms. The key is regular maintenance and the correct fuel. Checking error codes at every service will give you an indication of what the car is running like and if anything needs attention, do it.

Yeh it smells a fair bit but i found that it gave the car a much better note after bashing the guts out.
Rougher, i suppose you could call it, havent heard another commodore sound like it yet.
Sounds very good in the 5 speed.
    cheers

yeah if you run extra fuel into them like leaving one cylinder not firing they will get realllllllllll hot. My boss had a pushrod not sitting in the rocker properly and one rocker wasn't closing and that cylinder wasn't firing which on a ford EFI windsor means that so much extra fuel was getting into the front 4 cylinders back up through the manifold that none of those 4 were firing at low revs and the cats go so hot so fast that it melted the paint off the floor of the car and almost caught a rag on fire that was under the drivers seat (made it burnt brown in colour !! )
