How tricky/hard is it to convert the interior plastic work/door trims/everything to black in a VN? Would black work out well? Opinions?
I did my dash in black, came out well I think. Didnt have time to do the rest yet, but it does look good. All black might be a bit much though, as im going 2 tone.
stelthy's interior is crazy, probably the best ive seen so far in a VN-VP

Just to let you know to be careful with the paints you use, Acrylic paints have no flex and will crack and flake/peel off Vinyl also use 80% of your time to prep the surface with Dissol and prep vinyl, I have been doing my car in Black and Pink if someone can help me to put up pictures of my ride I'll show you.
i upload them to www.photobucket.com and post the URL in here

I'm most of the way through changing my VR Executive to mostly black. Only thing left now is the dash, and the front and rear pillar trims. Don't think I'll bother with the hoodlining - don't notice it most of the time anyway.
Got some black carpet which came out of a VZ - had to do a bit of cutting to get it to fit:

I used Satin Black "Vinyl and Plastic" paint from Supercheap on the door skins, console, and other bits and pieces. Seems to be pretty tough on the vinyl door skins, but it has flaked a bit on the window winders, although that may be just that I didn't prep them enough.
For prep, I just cleaned all the bits with Mothers vinyl and plastic cleaner, and then used a pre-painting prep of the same brand as the paint.
Took longer than I expected - I pulled all the seats out, the center console, the lower parts of the dash, and the door trims. And the door sill trims, and the trim around the door openings, dunno what thats called.
Made a nice mess of my car:

Haven't got too many good photos of it done, but here's the centre console:

The paint on the centre bits of the console is actually a bit lighter that you'd think from the above shot. Here's it in progress:

- I used a gunmetal grey paint from a modelling shop, just cause I liked the colour. Used about 3 of the little cans, from memory.
and one of the door skins:

I'm glad I went ahead - I know all black is fairly unimaginative, but I didn't want to risk making it look cheap and nasty (with bright colours or whatever), and it looks waay better than the "80s" grey it had before.
In answer to the original question/s: it wasn't really "hard" at all - just took some time and swearing. Just Commodores came in handy a few times, especially getting the door locks off - nearly destroyed the first door trim before I calmed down a bit and went and looked up how to do it.
And, yes I reckon all black works out very nicely indeed, although I couldn't resist the second colour on the console of course.
hmm yours doesent look to bad alex36, cmpared to 88greenvn's interior, his looks really dark black where as to yours is more lighter, nice work, i love the gun metal grey.. giving me idea's![]()

Thanks bill_randomhero and VP2NV.![]()
One of these days I'll take it outside on a nice day and get some decent shots of it, inside and out.
Mate thats looks sweet. Thanks for showing us that mate. Gives me much hope![]()
yeah that looks awesome... ive been thinking about doing it to mine over the past few weeks as im making a custom console(shaving+filling) like what is on the sc forum... but instead of going fully satin black i was thinking of doing a vp calais international interior look with the black and the camel or light tan colour... would look good as i reckon... but your is still very nice indeed.
Yeah, like I said, I partly stuck with black to be "safe" - but also cause I like it.
But black and camel sounds pretty nice (wish I'd thought of it) - especially if you could get some camel leather in there, maybe door inserts. Or even seats, if the budget would allow it (mine doesn't at the moment).
Thats one of the great things about doing "custom" stuff to a car - even if you aren't mega-rich, you can end up with something no one else has got, and I've seen people on here get some pretty professional looking results on a tight budget too.
This is making me want to get out to the garage and start doing more stuff!
the hardest thing I've foind with the whole 2 tone effect is getting the different materials in the same color, Eg Plastic paint, Vinyl paint, Seat trims and so on, just wondering did you do the top of your dash ? also I've found that its actually the Primer that causes the paint to flake/crack on the vinyl because it has no flex.

just if your interested in looking
still working on it most days
slipstream001,
I haven't done the top of the dash yet, but I'm going to when I get a bit of time for it.
I actually found the satin black gave a pretty even finish across all the bits I've done so far - vinyl and plastic. Maybe the number of coats helps?
I can't comment on the primer, cause I didn't use any. I probably didn't do as much prep as I should have - I just cleaned all the bits, and then did multiple coats - up to about 6 or so on bits I thought would get lots of wear - like the top of the door skins, and the top of the lid on the center console, where I tend to rest my elbow.
Mind you, my interior was fairly ratty to begin with, so I guess I thought anything would be an improvement - half-assed attitude, I know :-).
