Default New CAI = the goods

I don't know if many of you relaised it or even care but I made a new CAI for my car a while ago and it has made a huuuuuuuge improvement to my power on cold nights like tonight, It's a through the airbox floor through the panel along a posh hose (that cost 50 bucks) then pointing straight ahead out of a gap in the front bar I only used 80 mm pipe, I thought maybe I should go bigger but this seems to work pretty good allready. So I could mount to to some factory parts and make it all look slick as and legal as possible which I'm pretty sure it is but I still plan on making it a bit stronger yet just so I can have no aguments about it. Anyway it works good I also kept the enlarged factory intake over the radiator that I allready had I reckon I can break 5.7 seconds to 60 mph anytime soon now, maybe within a week

Dunno how much extra power (obviosly nothing when it's standing still) but it's a fair rapid car from 80-100 now so I think it's making alot more once it gets some speed into it. I'll take some pics at the end of the weekend once I've finished it up so it's all mint. I'm going to try and get that corvette servo in over easter too

This CAI your talking about Foamy... do you reckon it will work better with a VQ front bumper as it already has the cutouts in the bumper where the foglights go on the Caprice??

yeh i was gonna say because i tried to do it on the vn a while back but it just wouldnt fit anywhere, so i just ended up getting a 90mm 45deg pipe and put it in there, dont know if it did much but you can really hear the sucking noise now, sounds sweet as

I also forgot to mention that it works so good at sucking in cold air on cold night like tonight that my engine doesn't reach it's normal full temp anymore and my heater doesn't work very good either:P so I'll need a hotter thermostat again now

i thought you had trouble if you guys cut a hole through the panel under the air box etc. though it didn't pass inspection or something like that in aussie. what type of pipe/hose did you use? some pics would be good

only if they find it ....your right though, without engineering you cant touch/cut any part of the chassis, in case it weakens the panel and reduces its safety in a crash.

You can modify the inner gaurds to make for example mini tubs. But the front gaurds is a kind grey area on cars with mcpherson struts but HSV cut a hole under the airbox on the SV89 VN and it still passed but really it does need to be strengthened again so the car isnt weaker than it was, mines got 4 bolts and a steel trumpet replacing the 3 inch circle I cut out so I'm happy with what I've done but like I said I intend on making it stronger again yet

i was thinking of doing something similar but i've noticed the vacuum canister is going to need to be relocated to fit 3" ducting in there and there isn't anywhere to feed it air from a standard VN exec front bar. maybe i need to fit an SS bar instead

The SS bar cutouts are like a small notch taken out, hardly an opening.

Are you talking about the ball for the heater under the gaurd or the actual canister? you don't need to move the ball if that's what you are talking about or weren't you going through the gaurd?

yeah, the vacuum ball. i was intending to go down through the gaurd where the original airbox sits. i now run a fully shielded pod but it needs a good source of cold air to get the best performance from the pod etc

bump! yeah some pics would be great mate, thanks.

to re-ask a question from above - would it be legal? in NSW i know of people who have been done for dodgy CAI made out of conduit and stuff like that, but that was on riceburners and i'm sure they did very ordinary jobs, may not have even used airbox.

Any confirmation on the legal aspect?
