hey all about to do a minor service on my 1990 vn
just wondering what oil i should use and how much would i roughly need
also wat oil filter should i use?
thanx
I use GTX2 in my VN, its done 280k's, it's due to be changed again next week but as i went on a long run today i checked it for peace of mind and it hasn't used a drop.
You'll proberbly get a dozen different answers and reasons why one's better than the other.
It's up to the individual really, Castrol has been my choice for 10yrs.
I have tried others but find some break down sooner than others.
About 4 litres for a V6 i believe.

ok thanx mate
wat kinda filter do u suggest tho?

Another vote for Castrol GTX2 here. If you're into premium brands, I've never heard anything bad about Penrite, but I've never used it myself. Filters, can't go past Ryco. I'm currently using a valvoline filter I bought out of curiosity and the anti drain back valve that it is allegedly fitted with doesn't seem to be doing ****. I'll be going back to Ryco in 4000km. Should probably add that I reccomend 5000km oil changes, in mine the oil gets a little dark for my liking past about 7000km, it's another personal preference thing though.

i changed my oil today. Have use magnetec oil. Its about 10w 40 or somfin. But have used it for the two years that ive had my car and its been great. And ive used ryco filter for a couple changes. But lately used the GM filter and its been fine.
Australia. Love it or leave it
As has been mentioned in a few other threads. 10W40 may be a little thin for an older engine, particularly when the original specification from new for the VN was 20W50. While you may not hear or feel any problem, chances are your oil pressure is a bit on the low side with the thinner oil. Each to their own though.

I use either the Ryco or the Puralator, both seem fairly good.
I just wish i could find one that has a greater volume as the commy filters seem too small for my liking, something like Fords Z9 would be ideal if it is possible to get one that size to fit the V6.
I wouldn't touch those Valvoline filters either or their oils for that matter.
They seem to break down quicker and begin to smoke.
heheh, well with the V8 there's the option of running the big old style 308 filter. Which is why I'm running a valvoline, couldn't find a ryco in that size and I wasn't intending on running it for long, just until I'm sure all the rebuild crap has been caught in the filter. I kinda filled up two of the small ones with fine particulate junk in short order after my rebuild. Can't wait to go back to a decent filter, having zero oil pressure on startup makes me a saaad panda.Maybe there's a bigger old style filter to suit the buick? Might be worth looking it up next time you're at your local auto store.
