I'm having fuel hose dramas in the VN. A hose leaks fuel onto the top of the tank. I'm planning on dropping the tank and replacing the perished hose. While it's out I'm thinking of putting in an 80/85/whatever the SS tank was.. Do they look better from the back of the car? The reason I ask is that I'm going to paint it. Silver with black straps. Or black with silver straps... I'm not sure which would look better. Would finding a suitable instrument cluster be a problem?
Any ideas/info appreciated
cheers
sam
i know the vn calais cluster has a switchg on the back to set the fuel tank size.. not sure about any of the others though.
No they dont look better... They are massive. I dont like being able to see the fuel tank, its uglyyyy
I think it looks tough, myself. You'd want to do it in black, with chrome or polished silver straps. That way it hides most of the dirt, and you have less surface area to clean up on a friday night
The only problem with moving to the long-range tank is f*cking around with the different breathers, twin-fuel-pump setups, return lines and whatnot on installation... although if you're confident that you can get it all right, there's nothing stopping you.

Hmm. As nice as the 85L tank would be, I think I'll just paint mine for now![]()
Plus, it would then cost you $100 to fill your tankWho wants that?

uh.. still haven't decided on colours.. what do you guys reckon would look best? I don't care about cleaning it, I'm a detailer
btw the car's white with a vx clubby bodykit (albeit unpainted for now..)
Most people, myself incuded, go with silver with black tank straps.

That looks nice mate, did you paint it yourself? I'm planning to use high temperature automotive spraypaint, like what you use for brake calipers etc.. that's the right thing to do, right?
Cheers
Sam
p.s. Love the car, but I hope you've got a new exhaust tip since that photo..![]()

Heres a thread on the fitting of the big fuel tank... Long Range Fuel Tank...
strap on lefthand side is different on independant rears to solid rear axle...uses a sort of tee end instead of a straight bolt hole ...also take the protector off before you buy the tank and make sure there isnt a lot of rust in tank underneath the plastic stone defector ....also the vs/r tanks only use one pump and the earlier models use a external pump as well as a in tank pump. You will probably have to buy some of that silver coated insulation that is in different places when you refit the new tank...available at bunnings as flashing for gutters etc.I painted my tank black stoneguard and with fe2 rear springs you cant see the tank from the rear easily...just the way I want it.

Can anyone confirm if the L2 clusters have a switch for the fuel tank, as mine has an 85 ltr tank but I can only get 45ltrs into it from a quarter and it never reads full when I fill it up, it only gets to 7/8ths.
It is definately a 85ltr tank. It looks about the same as Airstrikes(sticks out under the bumper) and has the dual pump set up.
Well to answer the original question which I forgot to do J_D yes the level 2 cluster has the switch. It was on the back when I removed my old cluster to install the Calais dash.
My car is a Lexcen.. will my cluster still have the switch??
Im not going on your pic, I determined that it is a long range tank a while ago when looking at other VN execs on the road and noticing that you cant really see the fuel tank, whereas on mine it sits right down low, so low that its probably a 75ltr tank now with all the dints in it.
Well I pulled my dash out and it turns out its off a VP and I couldnt see any switch on the back of it. Could it be reading incorrectly because its a VP dash?
How do you know its off a VP?
VN/VP are the exact same, wont effect the readings what so ever. The switch is in a small sqaure hole on the back.
My VP has a switch for 63/85, but Savage in my "professional"opinion I wouldn't get an 85L tank coz they're ugly, and unless you intend driving over to see me, they're pretty pointless
