Im intrested to see where your temp gauge sits in your V8.
normally on the first notch up from cold. at worst, like sitting in traffic on a really hot day, second notch. but mine's a vn...
mine sits just below half way and on a really hot day sitting in traffic it gets up to 3/4, thats why i wanna get thermos hooked up so i can set them to the temp i want so it isn't that hot all the time.
have you got ure thermos hooked up yet airstrike?

Mine used to sit on the first mark. These days it has a mind of its own. Sits anywhere it wants. Even after I replaced everything it needed it seems worse.
Its even worse with the A/C on
Usually sits at 2 notches above cold on the VN, on hot days, big hills and in heavy traffic it can get to a little above halfway, on cold days it'll sit a little above 1 notch. My cooling system is mildly retarded, mostly my fault as well, I drilled a 3/16 hole in the thermostat to help with bleeding air as I was going through a period where I had the bastard in pieces every weekend. It hasn't done good things for the temperature stability. I'm looking forward to putting in twin thermos and a normal thermostat, as I believe that will offer a far more stable and controllable solution.

good to see mines not the only one then cos after the 1st 2 posts i was thinking my cooling system must be pretty bad

Mines never missed a beat, Shepperton + 38 degree day + sitting still for over an hour followed by burnouts = half way![]()
Make sure the radiator is in good condition, flushed, topped with coolant, etc and that the clutch on the fan aint stuffed.

actually, my radiator has a small leak on the spout that comes off it for the cap, it's where it joins to the radiator, how should i fix that, what type of weld does it need.

Mine sits just under the first full mark and goes slightly above that after a few runs at the drags but not much above. But I have a 180degree thermostat and no aircon so the radiator sees heaps of air. The whole thing stays a bit too cool really so I think I'll get a hotter thermostat
I've got an oil pressure gauge in the VN, and the oil pressure on mine doesn't hit what I'd consider "normal" levels until just below the second bar. ie. just below 10psi at idle and around 40psi at 2000rpm. From what I remember the VP gauge has the same scale as the VN, except with half bars marked. At just above the first full bar, my oil pressure is still in what I think of as "not quite warm enough to flog" territory. And this is a 300K old bottom end. So all these people sitting at around 1 bar on the temp gauge, do you have an oil pressure gauge? if so, what kind of pressures do you get in that temperature range? I think greenfoams on the right track thinking it might be a bit on the cool side.

I dont have a oil pressure gauge. I shouldbut ah if it dies I'll build a 355
sometimes there are things you just don't want to know, less gauges = less stress
. I run 40 weight oil in mine just incase I want to give take it to the limiter as soon as I start it
but I would like to run it a bit warmer than it is right now
All auto parts shop sells them but you need to edit the tune a little bit if you still want all your fuel ecconomy with one, but it's better to fix the problem you have rather than a bandaid. I only have the cooler thermostat so the inlet is a little cooler, I'm definitely sacrificing engine wear for a few kw though but it's my car and I'm allowed to make that choice and I change the oil every 3000 ks or so![]()
Yeah I thought about the less gauges = less stress thing for a while, but the OP gauge helped me pinpoint a BIG problem after the rebuild, so it's earned it's keep and it stays. Kinda interesting to watch what happens to the OP when she gets a bit warm as well, by halfway on the temp gauge it drops fairly alarmingly, I think it's going to be due for a full rebuild by the end of the year.

mine old one used to sit on a quarter on normal days and halfway between half and a quarter on hot days
We got rep back, yaaay!
mine sits about the second bar on the hwy and just below1/2 to about the 4th bar in the city depending on temp and my whole system has been replaced (except for the heater core). im going to fit thermos soon too and when i do i will build a thread on how to
Stato on the inside, berlina on the out side,5ltr under the bonnet, stockies all round...........that thing has to be a sleeper

I see this thread hasn't been used in a few years but my VN 5litre with mild cam and aluminum radiator running AU fans regulated by a Greenfoam tune reads just above half on the gauge going upto 3/4 at traffic lights of going slow in car parks. The fans come on at 92C and off at 89C. It never overheats without A/C on and can ide in park forever on a hot day with the fans cutting in and out.
With air conditioning on highway driving the gauge shows still just above half. With stop start driving I can't run the air-conditioning or the temp reads 3/4 of 100C+++ on my manual temp gauge tapped into thermostat housing.
And one more thing a VN 5 litres running at 1st baron my temp gauge means they are running at 45C. according to my spitfire manual gauge (not 100% accurate gauge perhaps but it closely matches the temps set on my tune)
I also run an autometer oil temp gauge and like pandaman post above at that temp the oil pressure is on the low side.
The temperature here is Darwin is constantly 33C and that measured in the shade but especially now during the buildup.
any suggestions?
I remember reading somewhere that the air conditioning condensor changed design on the VP's as the VN design placed a lot of heat load on the radiator. The VP condensor was supposed to be better, dunno how much better though, might be worth a try if you know a fridgie who has some spare time and a healthy amount of curiosity.
Another possibility is that your water pump may not be up to the task, particularly if it's been replaced at some point with a cheap unit with a pressed metal impeller. I doubt it's the problem, but it's a possiblity.
What brand of ally radiator is it? Same size or bigger than standard? If it's the same size as stock or an ebay cheapie, chances are you're not getting much benefit out of it over a standard radiator.
