I've recently made a cable for ALDL readouts, and along with my Serial to USB converter, it works like a charm. WinALDL and EFILive both work flawlessly with it, now I just have to understand it more. I can understand the readouts, although some seem unfamiliar to me. What Im asking is, what sort of things should I be looking for. Does someone have a site for some info on VN Commodores, and all the parameters, ie. What injector flow rate should be, IAC readings, Max/Min values, etc. Any help appreciated, Cheers.
each commodore has a different ecu setting for everything, there aint any vn or vp or vr or vs that is the same, all have th eir own little settings, but they must fall between a set paramater, i.e between 3 and 9 for any setting, depending on the setting

hey nice to see you have got it to work with EFIlive, just wondering what design you followed as mine will only work with winALDL. Also what brand serial to usb are you using?
I bought a serial to USB adapter off Ebay, from a guy called extras4u. Its some no name brand. Installed the drivers on my lappy, and she works fine.
With EFILive, you have to detect chatter first before you connect. It looks like a small green 'radar (thats how i describe it)' icon. Plug your cable into the laptop (or your serial to USB converter cable) then start EFILive. I have my Serial adapter as Com4. So I set it up for com4. Then plug in the cable to the ALDL plug. Click the 'detect chatter' button, and itll start diagnosing. It will come up that it cant detect any chatter (which it shouldn't on 160 baud). Then, click the green connect button, and start the engine, and away she goes.
The problem with EFILive is the fact its evaluation. Which means, it will only display a few guages (which can be changed), so you can only have a few guages show at a time. For $399, yo ucan buy it, but I hardly think its worth it. I can get my friend to make the same program for about $50, which uses the same codebase as WinALDL and exports it to a graphic nature. If I could 'aquire' a licence to EFILive, I'd be thrilled. Even a group buy of the licence would be a good idea, but thered have to be at least 20 people willing to buy it for a group buy (not to mention its illegal).
Good luck with it all, message me if you need more help.
Heres the data if anyone is interested to look at it. If anyone can tell me if anything looks out of place, that would be excellent. I've removed the PROM ID data as it was not important, and also the VSS readings, since the Speed was being reported wrongly (which is now corrected, US settings have to be used instead of Metric, some bug with the data being the wrong way around). Other than that, everything else was there. Its basically from a cold start, and a 15 minute drive to my GF's work, involving some highway driving and hard acceleration at some points. Any input appreciated.
Looks about the same as mine, except im running some crappy programme on mine, that shows it all in mph and imperal mesurements and also every so often 'spikes' the speed too 180ish... looks really funny when reviewing times.Originally Posted by richie83

Garth,
I'd be willing to make you a cable, although I live in WA. The main cost is the connector, which is $20 from supercheap. The rest of the bits total about $5. So $25 plus postage, and you've got yourself one. But note it only works on 160 Baud (VN/VP). On the other hand, I could take some photos of mine, and do my own schematic. Chances are you've got the transistor around the wrong way. I'll make a schematic for you right now :-)
What program are you using Viper? WinALDL is excellent (make sure you select the right EEPROM!). EFILive is good, as long as you use the right car, but it is limited. Only problem with WinALDL, is I selected metric measurements, and was getting MPH readings on the dash, after selecting US units, the speed was correct (and I actually found my speedo to be out by about 6km/h@100km/h.
richie83, start making it champ, let me know when it's ready so i can fire a money order yoru way, ill even throw in a justcommodore sticker, what colour? let me know when she's done
cheers

Garth, I'll probably get it done by either tomorrow or Thursday. What colour stickers are there?
Goodmorning People I Made A Cable (haven't Tested Yet) But I Found The Plug To Join To The Aldl Plug In The Car At The Wreckers

If you can drive a soldering iron it is fairly easy. One trick, snip off the excess pins in the back of the 9 pin serial plug to give your self a bit more room. Also use heatshrink.

that winaldl is the s$@t ive made two cables both 1&2 transistor ones work fine plugged into three different vn's all the sensor data totally different graph it with works spreedsheet and you can see it in visual format instead of text .Ive got a few prom id's anyone tell me about them 9988 or 4879 chears
