    Arrow Oil for V8

    Hey all,
I just recently purchased my new pride and joy from a member of this forum, Reaper. The car is a HSV VP GTS and I wanted to know your thoughts on the oil I should give her. Is there really any difference between oil for V8's and V6's, I just want the best protection I can get.

    Thanks,
    Mack.

Holden specify 20W50 for the 5L. I personally use castrol GTX2 and change it every 5000km. Different people will give you a multitude of different opinions.
Beau Duke: Man, I'm never gonna get outta this car again. I'm gonna live in it, I'm gonna eat in it and I'm gonna make sweet love to it!
Luke Duke: You mean you're gonna make sweet love IN it.
Beau Duke: Oh no, I'm gonna have sex with it.

As long as you use the oil recommended for the engine it should be good. If Reaper has been using synthetic oil, find out what it was and keep using the same stuff. If you change back to mineral oil after using synthetic it's not good for the engine.

I thought original spec oil was 15-40? anyway I run 10-40 Synthetic at the moment might be a little thin but I'm one of these people that think if the engines still tight enough to not burn oil then use the thin stuff , but for such a machine as a GTS I think Penzoil 15-50 synthetic if there is such a thing would be ideal. I'm not a believer in mineral oil

Well I just found out the Reaper was using Caltex Haveline multigrade (20-50). He seems to think it was semi-synthetic. I'll double check today.

Go the SIN 15 OIL From Penrite

    www.penrite.com.au

Sin Engine Oil 15 is a fully synthetic oil blended with highly shear stable viscosity modifiers and man made base oils. It exceeds API SM/CF and ACEA A3/B4 and JASO MA.

This oil is good for Turbo Engines,Supercharged and Engine's to the capacity V12
    Cheers.

When switching from mineral to synthetic it is a good idea to run a flushing oil through the engine first. If you don't the synthetic oil has a tendancy to dislodge any sludge build up and then it starts blocking things up. A flushing oil is designed to dissolve the build up and flush it out.

Its only about 12 bucks for oil flush from repco but i've herd that 200-300 ml of diesel will do the same thing.

No diesel is coming near my engine.

Yeah, the air filter was $16 or something, I had an old OK one from my VN sitting in my cupboard after installing my K&N POD. I wish I bought a K&N Panel now so I can reuse it on the GTS. So I changed from the one that was in the GTS (really dirty) to my other one which I cleaned with vacuum cleaner.

Never use diesel in an engine, all it will do is thin the oil, not flush it out. You can use diesel oil however, something like a 10w40 for around 100-200kms, the extra detergents in there will act like a flush. Diesel oil is more expensive than petrol oil so a flushing oil may be cheaper. Around $30 for 5 litres I think.

What difference does that make? A VN S1 through to VS SII is all the same mate. 10 weigh is far to thin, will be tappet noise like no tommorrow!

from memory i am using 10-50 in my 5.0l works fine no noise or anythign ... although i have noticed tha ti don't get as much oil pressure on idle .. i have reason to believe that it maybe a lil thing for the oil pump to suck it up so i might try a 20-50

My mechanic also reckons 20-50 would be better...

Well I rang the oil bloke and he either said go a 20W-50 mineral or a 15W-50 synthetic. Ive herd good thing from synthetic, so I chose the 15W-50 fully synthetic blend.
