Default Dead Fan Speed No 1 or 2

In the photo I'm guessing the dead fan speed 1 & 2 is some thing to do with the pitting bad contact inside the switch.

Any one know why 1 & 2 fail all the time?

EDIT. Risistor died at the same time as when I changed the fan control unit in the car. I had painted the face of the control unit black and swapped it with the grey one in the car (working at the time).

Replaced resistor (broken one in pic 2) and alls good.

i'm not 100% sure, but under your scuttle panel(plastic cover)you will find a bubble looking cap screwed onto scuttle,i can't remember whats under it,have a look there.although i think that may have something to do with air con....not sure

i remember hearing a while back that fan levels 1 and 2 work on a different circuit to 3 & 4. i have no basis for knowing this, but a search might bring up something. all the other threads i seen seem to point to a resistor like you heard

    Its the fan speed resistor.

    Replacing the Fan Speed Resistor
Some people say less talk more action, i say more torque less traction.

    Replacing the Fan Speed Resistor
Well I have a woking fan speed control unit that works on all 4 speeds. Took the 2 speed unit (old 1 & 2 not working unit) and painted it black to fit the interial colour change of the wagon. This got me thinking why. Took the front cover of the painted one and put it on the working control unit to complete the interia. All 4 speeds worked. So I put it down to the switch (photo in first post)

I know the resistor in the top of the heater box can also stop the fan.

I'm going to pull the fan control unit out and swop the switch over and see what goes with that.

Just fixed it. Dead resistor. I new the spare control unit I had only worked on 3-4 as I had 1-2 die before and the control unit replaced. (thats why I have a spare control unit). Edited the first post with resistor pic.

Might be worth replacing it with a VS one mate from U Pull It. I replaced mine a while back, the VS unit is less prone to failing.. Although my resistor was not the problem anyway (still dont know what is, but only fan speed 4 works).

The new ones as a straight swap replacement are alot better than the old ones anyway (VS or otherwise). I just got one from Holden when mine died.

Have you looked inside the switch - at the contacts?

The switch I pulled apart was pitted and had gone dark in places - making no contact at all.

I had the problem with my old air con and put it down to the switch, now I have the climate control it is still the same. So no idea.

Well the only way I fix electrical problems is to draw a map of the electrical circuit and then try and find the bad bit. 1. Its not the resistor? 2. Switch is good. 3. Connectivity of the resistor/heaterbox/switch unit.

The climate control switch only has 3 speeds? Plus auto.
