I have a VN and I can't turn the ignition key!!! I pulled the sterrinr wheel full lock and it has now locked in place. Is this common and how do i fix it!!
The key goes in OK but it will not turn even when I jiggle the steering wheel. The wheel won't unlock and I can't turn the ignition. HELP PLEASE!
Try taking some pressure off the lock by turn the steering wheel. Or jiggle the key while turning the steering wheel gently from side to side.
I have tried this and no smiles. Should I spray some WD40 in there?
which way did you turn the wheel to engage the lock?
if left, you need to pull it a little further left, hold it and try the key
if right, you need to pull it a little further right and hold it and try the key.
don't spray it with any lubricant at all,use graphite powder,if you can manage to get it in where the keys go,if not put some on key,and gently place key in ignition(so graphite doesn't fall off)gently rock wheel back and forth while also gently turning key, take it out after a couple of goes, put my powder in/on key and try again, may take awhile.
it is common with any ignition that has been used a lot,the mazda 626's tend to do it as well 1990 models anyrate.
Is the ignition barrel popping back out like it should when you pull the key out? Mine sometimes gets stuck in when I take the key out (this happens because the key is worn - it doesn't do it with a new key I got cut).
When this happens I can't turn the ignition until I put the key back in and pull it out sharply. This pops the barrel out as it should be and it all works again.
Hope this makes sense!
Its funny that people say not to put any lubricant in the barrel, when I did mine recently, the old barrel was greased up. I replaced it because a piece broke off and jammed it up. When assembling the new barrel I greased it up too. Works like a charm. Because it isn't exposed to the elements, no dirt or crap is going to get in there.
it can do though (dirt) especially if you work out doors, dirt in your pockets, even dust, abmittedly with dust it can take awhile to build up in side barrel, but dirt, not long at all...
people don't think of dirt sticking to their keys, depends where they keep keys, ladies in hand bags,,,LOL...god knows whats in their handbag,me personally it's a habit, slip em in my pocket.
actually never even thought to mention it,my boot lid just wouldn't budge with key,key would of snapped if i applied more pressure, laced lock up with graphite powder, opened up, after second application of powder and jiggling key in lock..and as stated by Shortstuff worn key, this happened with my hilux,i could take key out while motor was runningcan't though with newly cut key.
Just a marine grade grease I think. Thats the grease I used and it's white.
